Dear Mr. Anderson,

I have just learned from my friend Robert Shaw that he has decided to leave his position as a tour guide and that you
need to find a summer replacement quickly. I would like to apply for the position.

I came to this city two years ago to study at Columbia University. I was a student in history and economics since that
time. I am a hard worker and have held several part-time jobs at college: tutor, library researcher, and History
Department teaching assistant.

I am originally from Mexico City and speak Spanish and English fluently. My father is an English professor, and I have
learned to speak English as a child. When I lived in Mexico, I have worked at my uncle’s hotel. I helped tourists with
their travel arrangements in the city. I also gave city tours in both Spanish and English. I have a good sense of humor,
and my tours were a lot of fun.

Because of my history background, I have been very interested in this city since I arrived. I have done a lot of reading
and have discovered many fascinating stories about it.

I think I have the qualifications to make an excellent tour guide. Would it be possible to speak with you about the job
at a convenient time? I thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Carolina Burns

4.6 Read the passage and put the verbs in the PRESENT PERFECT or SIMPLE PAST.

David: I haven’t seen (not/see) those shoes before. Are they new?

Kate: Yes. I have just bought (just buy) them. Do you like them?

David: They’re OK. How much did they cost (cost)?

Kate: Oh, not much. They were (be) a bargain. Under $100.

David: You mean $99.99. That isn’t cheap for a pair of shoes. Anyway, we can’t afford to buy new clothes right now.

Kate: Why not?

David: Have you seen (see) this?

Kate: No. What is it?

David: The phone bill. It came (come) this morning. And we didn’t paid (not pay) electricity bill yet.

Kate: Well, what about the iPad you bought (buy) last week?

David: What about it?

Kate: You didn’t (not need) a new one. The old one worked (work) just fine.

David: But I need (need) the new model.

Kate: Well, I need (need) some new shoes.
