CE 435 – EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING

Earthquake engineering is an interdisciplinary scientific area, it identifies and solves

problems associated with occurrence of earthquakes, with the goal of reducing seismic risks to
socio-economically acceptable levels, it requires as it does knowledge and development from
geology, seismology, geotechnical, marine and structural engineering, and civil engineering.

The different methods of measuring earthquakes are Earthquake Magnitude Scale This
helps us understand that while the size (amplitude) differences between small and big quakes
are big enough, it is the strength (energy) differences that are meaningful. The Richter Scale the
scale was calculated for only one type of earthquake wave. It was replaced with the Moment
Magnitude Scale, which records all the different seismic waves from an earthquake to
seismographs across the world. Richter's equations are still used for forecasting future
earthquakes and calculating earthquake hazards.Using all this methods it can help us to prepare
during the earthquake to Create an earthquake safety plan for you and loved ones, including
pets. Identify safe places in each room of your home. Practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On with
each member of your household. Make or purchase an earthquake safety kit. Find out if your
home is in need of earthquake retrofitting and eligible for a grant. Identify and fix
potential earthquake hazards in your home.
Preparing your home BEFORE an earthquake is important to your safety. Decrease your
risk of damage and injury from an earthquake by identifying possible home hazards.

Philippines earthquake hazard is classified as high according to the information that is

currently available. This means that there is more than a 20% chance of potentially-damaging
earthquake shaking in your project area in the next 50 years. Based on this information, the
impact of earthquake must be considered in all phases of the project, in particular during design
and construction. Project planning decisions, project design, and construction methods should
take into account the level of earthquake hazard. Further detailed information should be
obtained to adequately account for the level of hazard.

This continuing program will provide accurate and timely information on significant
earthquakes and tsunami events that may significantly impact the Philippines through the
enhancement and continuous operation of the earthquake and tsunami monitoring system in
the Philippines. The Information System deals with the planning, coordination and control of the
Institute's earthquake data resources. It covers both data administration, which is concerned
with the management of meta-data and database administration, which is primarily concerned
with the technical integrity of the physical database environment, the day to day operations of
the Institute's earthquake-related databases and policies governing their everyday use.

Using the mentioned HAZARD HUNTER applications since we are living in flat surface
area and far from open sea the possible hazards related to earthquake is surface faulting,
ground shaking, landslide

The information and leanings in Earthquake Engineering that can help in my

profession to reducing the risk the population is exposed to by designing new structures so they
will resist strong ground shaking and also have the proper design and construction of buildings
in accordance with building codes, so as to minimize damage due to earthquakes.
As a A civil engineer's our jobs is to design, construct and maintain roads, bridges,
airports, tunnels, buildings, dams, water supply systems, sewerage systems, hydro-electric
projects and pretty much everything that constitutes infrastructure. But When earthquakes
occur that are strong enough to damage building foundations or destroy buildings, a
geotechnical engineer will begin examining why and how buildings collapsed in order to develop
architecturally stronger building designs to significantly reduce risks of future collapse.
Hydraulic civil engineers specialize in building and restoring flood-control dams. Sudden or
unexpected dam failures demand the attention of a hydraulic civil engineer to discover why the
dam failed and how to rebuild the dam to prevent future structural compromises.
Environmental civil engineers are essential for mitigating toxic waste disasters resulting in
contamination of a community’s water resources. Controlling aftereffects of a hazardous waste
event may also involve a variety of civil engineers specializing in drainage augmentation, air
pollution alleviation or protection of site workers from harmful radiation emissions.
