ACTIVITY 2: LET’S PRACTICE

Fill in the Punnett squares for each cross given to determine the phenotype and genotype ratios
for black and brown hair of the offspring. Black is dominant and brown is recessive.

Crosses with one homozygous dominant parent:

AA x AA AA x Aa AA x
aa

Offspring Genotypes:

AA Aa aa AA Aa aa AA Aa
aa

Offspring Phenotypes:

Crosses with one heterozygous parent:

Crosses with one homozygous recessive parent:

Refer to the crosses that you worked out on the front of this page to answer questions 1-8

1. What crosses will result in all dominant phenotype offspring?

2. What cross will result in all recessive phenotype offspring?

3. What cross will result in half dominant and half recessive phenotype offspring?

5. What cross will result in a 1:2:1 genotype ratio in the offspring?

6. What cross will result in all homozygous recessive offspring?

7. What cross will result in half homozygous dominant offspring and half
heterozygous offspring?

8. What cross will result in all heterozygous offspring?

9. In dogs, black fur (B) is dominant over yellow fur (b). A homozygous black dog
is mated with a yellow dog. Do a punnett square to show the cross and predict the
offspring (phenotypes and genotypes)

10. When two parents heterozygous for genes for curly hair are crossed, what percent of their
offspring would have curly hair? What percent would have straight hair?

11. Give the genotypic and phenotypic ratio of the offspring that will result from a cross between
two cats which are homozygous black and white.
12. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have dimples. But they found out that they are both heterozygous for the
trait because only one of their both parents carry the trait. Mr. Smith only his father has dimple
and so as Mrs. Smith. If both of them are heterozygous for having dimples, what is the
probability or percentage that their will have dimples?

13. Given: Rough coat (R) is dominant over smooth coat (r). Black coat (B) is dominant over
white coat (b). Homozygous rough coat, white pig is crosses with smooth coat, heterozygous
black pig. Give the genotype and phenotype of the offspring.
