1. Expound the statement: technology is a component of culture.
Technology is a component of culture in such a way that they influence
and are connected with each other. Technology has affected culture in different ways, both good and bad. It has affected culture in a positive way such that it shapes and promotes our culture. For example, because of technological advancements, there are a lot of tourists (local and foreigner) who come to see Sinulog and other festivals in the country. These people came to know about these events because of technology, specifically the Internet. On the other hand, it also affects culture in a negative way that it slowly replaces what we are used to. One example is how we changed from writing letters to our friends and families as a way of communication but now, we make use of different messaging applications to send our messages. Before, we always spend our afternoons outside the house to play different local games such as bato lata, chinese garter, piko, dampa, patintero, etc. But now, children only spend their childhood watching Cocomelon, Peppa Pig, and other shows on YouTube.
2. Describe the essential function of technology in society building.
Technology plays a vital role in the formation and molding of society. It
is an essential function in building a society because it improves the way people communicate with each other, which build relationships and establish common understanding. Due to technology, we are able to find people who share the same belief, attitude, behavior, and knowledge. As society becomes one, we are able to share different goals and build future, and technology helps us achieve them. Technology, more importantly, shapes some of the most important aspect of society such as the social and political aspect of it. Although technology helps us exercise our freedom of speech, it may also lead to more serious effects such as social imbalance, wars, and conflicts.
3. Briefly discuss how society affects the development of technology.
Society affects the development of technology as people control
technology (but also, technology controls people in return). Take scientists and researchers for example. Everyday, these experts involve themselves in scientific work, discovery, and research which give rise to technological advancements. A society’s way of thinking, belief, and ethics affects technology in a way that it either encourages or discourages it to be developed. One example of this is surrogacy and any other technology that assists reproduction in same-sex couples. Because of a society’s religion, many people think about this situation differently and do not accept this type of practice. Another example is the development of robots, but many people disagree to it because it might cause societal problems such as unemployment and may bring danger to society as a whole.
