Problem statement- How might we replace the notebooks and books so that
deforestation can be reduced and help in protecting the environment?
Persona
Every single person in today's time wants to be the best version in their life and for that the
academic curriculum which they have to maintain becoming a great headache in their way of
journey. As like this, one of the generous schoolboys in the city of Bangalore in the name of
Ryan Rathore who is currently studying in 12thstandard in St.Joseph's Boys High School, use to
take care of the environment after staying in one of the busiest cities in India, as a topper of the
class he uses to maintain a tight plan from the morning onwards, he uses to wake up at 5'o clock
in the morning taking ahead his daily routine in one day of his journey live and after being back
from the school he takes his snacks and takes ahead the rest of the day with his study. As a
conscious person toward the environment, he uses to plant trees here and there and always takes
one step to protect the environment by using eco-friendly products. Ryan lives in the side of the
city of Bangalore where the surroundings are enveloped with plants and trees. From childhood,
he had a keen interest in accounting to take a great step of becoming a financial advisor and
manager. But the riddle in his way is, that he had to buy very thick notebooks to take great
practice in the finance subject besides of this he also has to maintain a huge bundle of books
regarding the various subject in the stream of commerce. One of the generous people of the city
uses to think about the trees that people use tons of paper in a day for various works, and for that,
at least 17 trees are required to make only a ton of paper. As a higher standard student he also
has to carry great amounts of books and as a human being to take a look at every single thing is
not very possible so he also gets reviled by the teachers for not taking every book. As for having
a good calculative mind, he calculated the total cost he has to carry as of fixed expenses was
above five thousand (5K) which besides harming the environment surrounding also makes the
expenses much more to be as of a 12th standard student. He also tried to take notes in the
notepad of his mobile phone but he use to get distracted by the various notifications comes when
he use to come in online for which purpose he wanted something which can be very much
effective in terms of his academic progress and the environment as well which will give an edge
in the education field of Ryan.

Firstly the 5 why technique has been used to reach out towards the real root cause of the
problem.

Why teachers were demanding books from different authors?

The exams were near so the student have to get prepared for the exams and as of a topper it
always been the priority of the teachers to look of those students who do work on themselves and
that's why the teachers were demanding books of different authors of the same subject.

Why the student was being scolded by the teacher?

The main reason behind this was as he lives on the side of the city, the market is too far from his
house and he also doesn't have any vehicle to go to the market repeated wisely. So Despite
having all the books and notebooks that were required but sometimes he forgets to bring one of
them to the school due to which he gets scolded by the teacher.

Why does Ryan felt frustrated?

As the topper of the class, he use to maintain his personality, but sometimes having the books he
forgets to put them into his bags since the exams were coming near the teachers are also putting
pressure on the students for which he gets scolded by the teacher because of the lack of sincerity
from the viewpoint of teacher he gets scolded by the teacher in front of the whole class which
make him very much upset for which this depression gets converted into frustration.

Why cost issue is becoming a disturbing factor for Ryan?

Ryan is a student who is very much dedicated to his study and has the dream of becoming a
financial manager & advisor with his keen interest in accounting for which he has to purchase a
very thick book which cost nearly Rs 100 to 120 per notebook. As a student since he doesn't
have any income to bear that many expenses can be a burden for the student and that's why he
has calculated the expenses which are fixed regarding his notebook or any books which were
above five thousand (5k) per month. So, if a student has to invest this much monthly, it will

become a problem think about. That's the reason the cost issue becoming an issue for Ryan.

Why Ryan was thinking of something which could be used instead of carrying different
books daily?
Ryan was a person with a generous heart who is very much conscious about the environment
they use to plant trees after staying in one of the busiest cities in India and always use to take
initiative to protect the environment and not get harmed by any other foreign elements in his
way. If we take a look at a page we need to cut trees which helps us to maintain the sustainability
of the environment. So, if we use notebooks in this way it can hurt the whole environment
keeping in mind Ryan wanted to use something which can be eco-friendly and will be much
more efficient for a sustainable environment that's why he wanted to carry something instead of
these heavy books. Keeping in mind the problems which have been faced by Ryan Rathore there
may be many students like him who use to think in this way for which some of the problems
have been identified keeping in view the user's authenticity.

What types of problems were faced by the students like Ryan?

The problem which has been highlighted mostly is the stress behind the huge book load which
affects environment sustainability. Besides of these as a topper if the student gets more
pressurized by society and the school environment a mentality will grow in his mind to be the
best which is the perception in the mind which was created by the pressure made by society so if
the students result gets down for a semester or term the depression will create of not being the
best which will further effect in the concentration scenario of the student. So, the student has to
be in his way so that he can make the exploitation with which he has on his own. That's the
problem being faced by Ryan which has been further highlighted by considering the student
group.

When the problems occur for the students like Ryan?

This problem usually occurs with the students in their school life. Because from school life only
the pressure of regarding their books and educational structure begins which usually makes their
mind forcibly to think in that way which can have an adverse effect in their later age.

Why Ryan didn't want to carry different books with him?
According to the survey it has been found that many of the children's posture has been becoming
badly habitual which is affecting the health issue of the Students because of the heavy subject
diversity which they have to carry differently in their daily journey towards the school. That's
why Ryan thought to use something which can get used without harm to the health as well as the
smoothness towards academic progress.

Who faces the problems?

Students in the mid-academic career like Ryan like the developed persona which has been
mentioned in the problem statement usually face problems in their academic life.

Why these problem Occur?

With the progression of technology the requirements for knowledge also increasing so the field
of study which the students have to carry from their school-age is sometimes becoming much
more than the capability of the students for which the subjects are diversified for which they
can't withhold that and in turn sometimes negatively effect in the academic performance which is
being faced by the developed persona named Ryan for which the scold of teachers because of his
forgetfulness sometimes make him upset in front of the full class and the huge burden of the
books also have cascading effect in the environment as the pages of the books forms from the
trees so how much trees have been used to make those books that are why the degradation of the
environment occurs.

How can we solve the problem faced by Ryan?

With the digitization of technology if we apply the same technology in the educational field it
will have a great result. As per the thought of Ryan, if we digitally use some Eco-friendly things
will be great. So we can use to have a Digipad which can have great benefits for the students like
Ryan because for this the environment also doesn't get harmed and we can develop a sustainable
environment. Since he already tried using the notepad on the mobile phone but for the distraction
comes in the form of notification he uses to get in the way because of which the Digipad won't
have an internet connection which won't distract the mind of the students also not have the

internet will be eco-friendly. And all the books which Ryan use to carry daily in his school can
get tired easily in the Digipad only and it will be much more efficient to read and make notes and
there won't also be any issue to forget the books or going in the market daily which also been
time-consuming in this pad the sufficient amount of storage will be given and all the academic
procedure will be done smoothly without any hazards.

Concluded idea regarding the solution towards the sustainable environment.
Trees are the essential part of life for living beings, since the beginning, trees have furnished us
with two of life’s essentials, food and oxygen. As we evolved, they provided additional
necessities such as shelter, medicine, and tools. Today, their value continues to increase and
more benefits of trees are being discovered as their role expands to satisfy the needs created by
our modern lifestyles. But these necessities of human are destroying our environment and
causing many disasters. Trees increase our quality of life by bringing natural elements and
wildlife habitats into urban settings also thety contribures towards the climate change and many
things. After learning about these things Ryan realized the importance of trees and thought about
his daily routine and lifestyle and thought that how it is affecting the environment, and he
observed that the notebooks and different types of books that he unintentionally forgot to bring
to the school are made up of trees causing major damage to the environment, in addition, due to
not bringing the books and notebooks he also face problems in front of the whole class. But, it is
not only his problem but the majority of the students regarding the purchase of notebooks
frequently and different books by different authors which are also heavy and costly,But it is the
era of digitalization when most of the things are converting into digital platforms, then why
notebooks can't?
Solutions exist in the market but do not help the user or the environment. People can buy tablets,
iPads and laptops, but these devices create more distractions for users while working as
compared to the paper notebooks. Also these devices are expensive.
So the solution is that users need something that can replace the use of paper in notebooks and
books also it can help the students, teachers, and other users to write without purchasing ink
pens, and pencils. The user will get all of the books related to the streams digitally on the same
platform; they don’t need to purchase too many costly books. The less demand for books and
notebooks will create a huge impact on the environment and it will help to decrease the use of
trees for the manufacturing of paper and as a result, fewer trees would be cut down. The device
which is cheaper to access, easy to use, and convenient to carry is a digital pad that can be called
a digipad, it is like a 10-inch screen pad because size matters for the attraction of the users, if the
device is very small or very large so users can attract with the device. Whatever we write on the
notebook it is automatically save in the memory in the specify format whenever we want and it is

also a hand writing recognition product means whatever users write so device recognize his/her
hand writing, the pad comes without any internet, Bluetooth, or cellular network access as these
things create a distraction for the users, and for these things users have smartphones. Also for the
safety of the eyes of the user, the blue light technology can be used. Digipad is just a pad for
writing; it is a replacement for notebooks and books it aims to reduce the usage of paper.
Students, teachers, and other users can purchase a digipad with an amount of 5k to 6k. It can
only be used to write through the pens that come with the digipad as we write in a notebook, but
this pad has storage and a battery also it has sometype of software which will help to connect the
pad with computer or smartphones for the file sharing and the battery can be used for 10 days on
a single charge, Users can carry it very easily and economically. Also, users can add more
documents and books through an external memory card to have many different books.
