Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, was founded with the noble vision to raise professionals
and leaders of high academic calibre and unblemished character, nurtured with a strong motivation and
commitment to serve humanity. The institution is the fulfillment of the vision of its founders Late Dr. D.
G. S. Dhinakaran and the present Chancellor Dr. Paul Dhinakaran. Established in 1986 as an Engineering
College, it was granted an autonomous status in 1999 and declared Deemed-to-be University by the
University Grants Commission (UGC) in recognition of its academic excellence by the Ministry of Human
Resources Development under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 vide notification no 9-3-2000-U3 dated
23.6.2004 of the Government of India. Accredited by NAAC, the institution offers a wide array of
Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral Degree programmes in various branches of Engineering, Biotechnology,
Food processing and Agricultural Sciences. From a humble beginning of 180 students, the institution has
rapidly grown to 8491 students and 452 faculty representing 18 academic departments.

In the three decades of service to higher education, Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences has
made significant progression in teaching learning, research and consultancy, innovation and transfer of
technology, community service and value education. Translating the vision of the Founders into action,
the institution is currently engaged in finding solutions to human problems in the four major areas such
as Water, Food, Healthcare, and Energy through scientific and technological interventions

The Karunya Emblem has a human face to indicate that the well being of humanity is central to our
entire endeavors and that we shall never forget them in the midst of our equations and diagrams. The
symbol has a gear wheel as the human eye, in appreciation of the importance of technology in today’s
world. The lighted torch stands for the light of knowledge, the light that promises moral, social and
economic well being; The hand holding the torch depicts Karunya’s contribution towards enlightening
the young minds by spreading knowledge through education. The motto ‘ARISE AND SHINE’ is a
motivation to the youth to shine in their respective fields of study. To sum up, Karunya’s emblem

Best IT Facilities

Computer Technology Centre (CTC), a centralized computing facility, provides world-class computing,
network and educational technology support for the academic and research community of Karunya
Institute of Technology and Sciences . The academic computing resources include high-end IBM PureFlex
System, Blade servers, Rack servers, Workstations and Personal Computers. Green computing is
practiced by server consolidation and desktop virtualization using VMware products.

A separate Storage Area Network has been commissioned by the centre for data storage. CTC is well-
equipped with licensed software for academic and administrative needs. We encourage the use of free
and open source software.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship Cell (E-cells) is set up to foster entrepreneurship among the students. It is like a club,
run by students and driven by the management of the institutes.Students learn important & useful trait
about entrepreneurship. Even though students do not take up entrepreneurship as a full-time
profession, the skill sets learned as E-Cell members would be extremely helpful to them in any job.

E-Cells conduct several activities such as workshops, interaction with successful entrepreneurs, building
prototypes, setting up small campus companies where other students can be your customers, internship
opportunities with outside companies etc.

Residential Life

Karunya is a residential University. Students are housed in thirteen different, well-furnished hostels with
all the necessary facilities provided within the campus. Students need not look far for any amenity that
they may require during their stay on campus. From a hospital to a bank, from dine-outs to utility stores,
from Xerox shops to photo studios, you name it - we have it on campus!
A capable hostel administration governs all the activities of the hostel residences; Apart from the staff,
each hostel also has a set of care-takers catering to the needs of the students. The University maintains
a safe, secure and comfortable environment for the staff and students, where they can interact with
each other at all times and the students may find support and solace while facing any challenges or
struggles during their college life.

Sports Facilities

KITS has an excellent infrastructure to meet the sporting requirements and regular physical exercise.
The University has a newly constructed indoor auditorium having an area of 748.162 sq.m meant for
shuttle badminton, table tennis and carom. The Evangeline fitness gym is one among the top class
facilities constructed & maintained by the Department of Physical Education of KDU. This gym is
installed with the latest gym equipment of the highest standard.
