Pre Lab 2 DC Motors Load Characteristics

Attention: You, as the group leader are required to do the Pre-lab among your group
members. The problems must be discussed in details and written in the provided
minutes of meeting. Lab experiments and reports must be done in a group of no
more than 4 students. All the best!

Group: Section: Date:

1. Draw the equivalent circuit of a series-wound, shunt-wound and separately-excited

DC motor with voltmeter and ammeter connections to show measurements of terminal
voltage, armature current and excitation current.
[12 marks]

2. Derive the Kirchoff’s voltage law equations for series-wound, shunt-wound and
separately-excited DC motors.
[6 marks]

3. Derive the torque vs. speed equations for series-wound, shunt-wound and separately-
excited DC motors.
[4 marks]

4. Draw and label the torque vs. speed graphs for series-wound, shunt-wound and
separately-excited DC motors.
[4 marks]

5. Describe the effect of field/excitation current interruption (IF = 0) for shunt-wound and
separately-excited DC motors.
[2 marks]

6. Describe the effect of unloading a series-wound DC motor while it is still operating.
