Literary analysis of the poem From Saudi with Love

Literary Criticism on “From Saudi with Love”

by Ariel Borlongan

The narration informs us that the letter is full with conflicting feelings, which is one of my initial
impressions of the poetry. Emotions shared by the author and the listener, such as happiness,
love, regret, and sadness. This is a "pangangamusta" letter, as we call it in the Philippines. The
letter is written by an OFW from Saudi Arabia who misses his family in the Philippines,
particularly his wife and children. Although the narrative appears to be a romantic love letter at
first, the finale contains an unexpected plot twist that ends in tragedy. As you read the narrative
word by word, the finale was a full game of emotions.

The poem was clearly composed in the past, based on the tragedy of the narration, as
beheading of offenders was only employed as a punishment in former years. The narrative
serves as a wake-up call to everyone about what is happening to Filipino employees in other
countries. Ending the life of Filipinos without allowing them to visit their relatives and loved ones
in their country. As the vision of your husband's head being severed from his body fills you with
anguish and melancholy, you leave them distraught and drowning in grief. Borlongan used
flashbacks throughout the poem to let the audience visualize the emotion of the narration more
clearly. "Ang aking Junior, nagba-basketball pa ba?" for example. ", in which his son is shown
playing basketball.

In contrast to these joyous and happy feelings, the narrator paints a vivid picture of what is
going on in the poem. The poem is written from the viewpoint of a husband with two children
and a wife who lives in the Philippines. The poem is full with detailed details and has a simple
concept.
