QUIZ ON HYPOTHESIS TESTING (Z-TEST AND T-TEST)

Name: _______________________________________ Course/ Section: ________________

General Direction:
Read and analyze each problem below. Identify the test statistic for each of the following
problems, then write the answer using the following format:

a.) H 0 :
Ha :

b.) level of significance, degrees of freedom(if applicable) and direction of the test

c.) test statistic computed value with complete solution (Note: You have the option to
use MS Excel if possible, however, you need to copy and paste the results here)

d.) decision: comparison of computed value and critical value

f.) interpretation/conclusion:

Problem Set:

1. The mean Verbal SAT score for the population of first students at Radford is 520. The
standard deviation of scores in this population is 95. An investigator believes that the mean
Verbal SAT of first year psychology majors is significantly different from the mean score of the
population. The mean of a sample of 36 first year psychology majors is 548. Test the
investigator's prediction using an alpha level of .05.

2. An investigator predicts that dog owners in the country spend more time walking their dogs
than do dog owners in the city. The investigator gets a sample of 21 country owners and 23
city owners. The mean number of hours per week that city owners spend walking their dogs is
10.0. The standard deviation of hours spent walking the dog by city owners is 3.0. The mean
number of hours country owners spent walking their dogs per week was 15.0. The standard
deviation of the number of hours spent walking the dog by owners in the country was 4.0. Do
dog owners in the country spend more time walking their dogs than do dog owners in the city?

3. The following are the pre and post test scores of 10 pupils before and after having
given remedial teaching and learning activities in Mathematics:
Pre-test: 75, 50, 46, 62, 57, 54, 39, 49, 52 and 36
Post-test: 85, 70, 66, 71, 80, 81, 68, 60, 81 and 58.

Did the group make a significant gain as a result of the activity? Use 0.01 level of significance in
testing the hypothesis.
4. On the basis of her experience with clients, a clinical psychologist thinks that depression may
affect sleep. She decides to test this idea. The sleep of nine depressed patients and eight
normal controls are monitored for three successive nights. The average number of hours slept
by each subject during the last two nights is shown in the following table:

Hours of Sleep
Depressed Patients Normal Controls
7.1 8.2
6.8 7.5
6.7 7.7
7.3 7.8
7.5 8.0
6.2 7.4
6.9 7.3
6.5 6.5
