Figure 1: Electrohydraulic Thrustors according to DIN 15 430 in principle

Electro hydraulic thrustors are compact closed systems, consisting of an electric motor and a hydraulic
unit. In the switched-on state the electric motor (2) in the lower part of the housing drives the impeller
wheel (4) of the hydraulic unit lying above. The produced hydraulic pressure delivers the working fluid
under the piston (7) that pushes the piston rod (8) to the stroke end. In the switched-off state or by power
cut the pump stops operating, the oil pressure falls very quickly and the piston rod returns to its start
position.

In application as a brake thrustor either an internally re-setting spring (c-spring - similar to a brake
spring) supports the lowering or an external load as a brake weight or a brake spring. Within the use it is
to consider that the remaining stroke force of the piston rod is determined by the difference of the
hydrodynamic force produced inside the thrustor and the opposing braking force.

The lifting and lowering times depend on the load and the viscosity of the hydraulic oil which is temperature –
sensitive. They are adjustable in thrustors with an equipped descent and / or ascent valve.

If the normal piston descend (lowering) time is insufficient, it can be reduced by three capacitors in parallel
circuit. Using this capacitor arrangement the slow down time of the electric motor is reduced with switch-off
and so the oil pressure decreases rapidly. In this case, the thruster must be controlled by a separate relay.

The hydraulic part inclusive tank (5) is located in a closed housing (6). The oil level can be controlled and
adjusted from the outside through the oil feed opening (9). Electro-hydraulic thrustors are delivered ready
to be mounted, painted and filled with oil. They are to be fastened with bolts thru the bores of the lug (1)
and the piston rod head (11).

The electrical supply lines are connected to the terminal box (3). All units, except types 250-50 and 350-
60, offer additional protection against contamination and damages by means of a dust cover (10) above the
piston rod.

3. Mechanical Equipment
As described before the thrustor contains within its cover a three-phase asynchronous motor, a hydraulic
system plus operating cylinder with piston and rod.

Fitting Positions
Installation can be done vertically (piston rod upwards), or for the types with 60mm stroke even horizontally
(terminal box and tank upwards) and in any intermediate position. The models with 120 stroke are to be
installed in a vertical position only. The lug (1) with the terminal box can be delivered turned to the right or left
by 90° (to be indicated in the order), the piston rod is turnable.

Thrustor Temperature and Ambient Temperatures

Attention: Danger of Burning!

The thrustor surface temperature could exceed 100°C!

Service temperatures range from -20 °C to +50 °C (-4°F to 122°F).

In case of different temperatures please contact us.

Corrosion protection
The housing is painted with a polyurethane based enamel. The hardened piston rod is hard-chrome plated
and polished.

4. Electrical Equipment

Thrustors are driven by a three-phase motor (2). System of protection for all types is IP 65 (DIN 40050). Motor
winding is tropics-insulated, thermal insulation class F.

Connection
All types are equipped with a terminal box (3) with 6-pole terminal board, feed line M4, protective conductor
M5 and cable entry with thread PG16 at the bottom (on the right hand side for types 250-50 and 350-60).
Standard design of the motors is Y-connection.

Service voltage
Standard service voltages are e.g.: 400 V, 50 Hz, 3~
460 V, 60 Hz, 3~
500 V, 50 Hz, 3~
690 V, 50 Hz, 3~.
Other service voltages and frequencies are available.

Operating conditions
All units are suitable for continuous Operation S1 (100%) and intermittent Operation S3 (60%ED) up to 1800
starts per hour. Deviations from the service voltage by max. ±10% have no influence on the unit’s capacity.

5. Options

All thrustors can be equipped with the following options against surcharge:

Lifting Valve (Descent V.) and/or lowering Valve (Ascent V.)

By integrating a lifting and/or lowering valve setting times can be extended. The valves are installed above the
terminal box in the hydraulic area and can be regulated from the outside. An at least 20-fold extension of the
setting times with continuous control is possible.

Limit Switches
The thrustors can be equipped with mechanical or inductive limit switches in order to signalise the working
position of the piston rod. An alternative solution is: limit-switch-set at the spring-tube.

Heater
For operation below -20°C a heating equipment must be installed being also used as a stand-by heater with a
separate power supply.

Special Paint
Upon request the standard enamel can be supplied in all available RAL colours against surcharge. Special
enamels with deviating painting can be supplied at extra charges.

Additional options, like brake spring (c-spring) or re-setting spring, on request.

6. Operating Fluid and Lubrication

The values of oil-volumes in following table 1 are average quantities and are lower for thrustors with valves
and / or springs.

Ed-thrustors are supplied for a temperature range from -20°C to +50°C and filled with hydraulic oil of class HL
10 DIN 51524. Different temperature ranges require special oils.
This "long life" filling is not subject to wear or contamination during operation, as long as the thrustor is in
perfect condition.
In case of refilling after repair, all other types of class HL 10 DIN 51524 may be used.
All bearings in the Ed-thrustor receive an original lubrication of grease with the "long life" grease K-L3 to DIN
51825 (e. g. Shell Alvania R3). Thus, Ed-thrustors are largely maintenance-free.

6.1 Level Check

Burn Hazard: Overpressure is generated within the cylinder areas of operated warm
thrustors. Therefore danger of burns with hot operation fluid exist while
opening the filling scew!
Operation fluid (hydraulic oil) must be checked, refilled or drained in
cold status only!

The thrustor is filled appropriate if the fluid level reaches the lower edge of the filling hole while the thrustor is
in vertical position and the piston rod is retracted.

The thrustors Ed 300-50, Ed 500-60 /-120 and Ed 800-60 /-120 are to be filled up to the overflow plug.

If the filling quantity is too less, the unit doesn’t generate the maximum lifting force. An improper high inner
pressure will be produced with overfilling.

6.2 Refilling

In case of refilling, the thrustor has to be filled in vertical position up to the lower edge of the filling borehole of
the oil feed opening (9).

In order to prevent possible inclusions of air, run the unit through several strokes. Then check oil level again
and top up as required.

Finally, tighten charging connection and overflow screw (if existing) firmly.

7. Installation, Transport and Storage

7.1 Transport and Storage

On receipt of the thrustor check the shipment presently for completeness and possible transport damages.
Missing elements and damages are to be announced to the manufacturer, forwarder or sender of the goods
without delay.

The units could be stored horizontally or vertically. They should be protected against climatic influences,
although they are designed and built for outdoor installation. It is to bear in mind that the sealing made of
rubber materials may lose their elasticity in extended storage periods and therefore the functioning could be
influenced.

Attention: Mounting and maintenance may only be executed by competent personnel!

Before executing inspection and maintenance works, prevent automatic
starting by taking suitable preventive steps!

WARNING: In case of power breakdown or switching off of already installed thrustors

danger of being crushed will exist from unit parts because the piston rod will
self-actuating retract with power as a result of inner or outer (brake-)spring- or
weight-load.

Attention: The piston rod is to be protected whenever handling the thrustor; it must not
be damaged and no lateral force is allowed to impact on the rod.
In the same way contamination is to avoid. E.g. the rod sealing could be
damaged later because of color or spots.

7.2 Mounting
The thrustor could be mounted vertically, up to 15° in direction of the terminal box tilted or horizontally, in
doing so the terminal box has to be in overhead position functionally. Accordingly it is valid for the with 90°
shifted bottom bores.

If another installation position is required, the thrustor is to rebuilt by the manufacturer.

Attention: In most of the applications the thrustor serves as a safety equipment, especially in
braking systems. Therefore a dismantling and disassembling must only be done
by qualified personnel of the manufacturer and in normal case only at factory!

Attention: The fixing pins on the hole in the fixing lug and the piston rod must be provided
with reliable moderate grease protection to avoid seizing up; the pins are to be
secured against axial dislocations!

7.3 Electrical Connection

Attention: Before connecting it is to be checked if the existing supply voltage and frequency
is conform to the specification on the type label!

Attention: Assure for all cable connections that the tilting movement of the thruster is not
constrained for the application!

Figure 2 and 3 show with the wiring diagrams the standard possibilities of connection. All three-phase motors
are star connected when they are delivered in normal condition. A conductor cross section of 1,5 mm² is
sufficient for all type sizes. Always keep the terminals clean. The top cover of the terminal box must be
tightened with a proper sealing.

Thrustors with a built in additional heater are to be connected acc. to figure 3 with an auxiliary cable lead-in
PG21. The connecting voltage is 220 V or 110 V. The customer must provide a thermostat for controlling the
auxiliary heater. The heater must not switch on above -20°C / -4°F due to the risk of overheating.

8. Starting up and Adjustment

Check the following prior to commissioning:
• Check of the oil level: Open the plug (9) with the thrustor in the vertical position. The unit must be totally
full of oil.
• The electric connection must be according to the power rating given with the specifications on the plate.
• All plugs, covers, bolts etc. must be properly mounted and tightened.
• All mounted parts of the hole assembly are to be well aligned. The free swivel-feature of the thrustor must
be guaranteed. Transverse forces may not act upon the piston rod.

Should the unit incorporate valves, they shall be set as follows – see figure 4:
• Loose the screw plug (3) with a suitable wrench.
• Switch on and off the thrustor several times during this adjustment. Turn the valve shaft of (H) or (S) up or
down until the desired timing is obtained. A lifting time of 5s is preset by factory .
→ Turning the adjusting screw (2) clockwise increases the acting or resetting time
→ Turning the adjusting screw (2) counter-clockwise reduces the acting or resetting time
Never unscrew the slotted nut (1) because of leakage danger!
• Tighten the screw plug (3).

Attention: The manipulating times are depending from temperature and must be set with
warm operated thrustors!

Attention: Do not unscrew the adjusting screw (2) further than the edge of the housing (4)
when turning it counter-clockwise!

9. Maintenance

Attention: If it is necessary to dismount a thrustor for doing maintenance work, take suitable
precautions to hold or support the unit.
Thrustors have a weight between 10 and up to 50 kg!

Maintenance of the thrustor is reduced to a periodic operation and oil condition check. The oil changing
frequency must be established as a function of operation and oil condition check. It is normally about 6 month
for intermediate conditions. Should the oil have changes in its viscosity or darken considerably change it
according to the following instructions:

1. Remove the thrustor from its place and put it horizontally so that the filling hole remains in the lower position.
2. Remove the plug (9) and drain the oil.
3. Position the thrustor vertically with the rod in the lower position so that the total emptying is obtained.
4. Rinse with a small quantity of clean oil.
5. Fill the thrustor up to the top in a vertical position with the piston rod up. Use quality hydraulic oil HL 51524.
6. Operate the thrustor several times and refill in order to prevent air pockets.
7. Shut the filling plug (9) firmly.
8. Install the thrustor in its operation position.
