Activity 4: Test for Lipids

Objectives:

At the end of the experiment student should be able to:

● Examine physical and chemical properties of lipids.

● Compare the properties of soap with detergent.

Procedure:

A. Spot Test
1. Using the oils available in your home identify three, that you could use in this experiment it could
be an essential oil, cooking oil or coconut oil.
2. Place a drop of that sample on a piece of bond paper.
3. Allow it to dry and note any transparency produced.

B. Surface Tension
1. Using a clean and dry dropper and record the number of drops that will be formed from 1ml of
pure distilled water in a glass.

2. Now rinse the dropper with a soap solution.

3. Record the number of drops from 1ml of the soap solution without rinsing the dropper fill it with
pure distilled water and again note the number of drops.

C. Nutritional Label Analysis

1. Find the nutrition Facts label on one food item wrapper, then answer the questions on your
nutritional label analysis hand out. When you are finished, answer the same questions for the
remaining two food items.
2. Next, choose four different fat-containing food items and determine a serving size for each so that
the total amount of food you select contains one day’s worth of recommended dietary fat for teen.

Note:

● Total fat calories for one day for girls average about 650 calories (more for athletes). Ten percent
or less of total daily calories may come from saturated fats.
● Total fat calories for one day for boys average about 700 calories (more for athletes). Ten
percent or less of total daily calories may come from saturated fats.
● Grams of saturated fat should be no more than 24 for girls and no more than 27 for boys.
