The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a global program in countries
like Japan, Australia, the USA, Europe, and African countries. It is generally known as co-
operative education and referred to as a sandwich in Europe. It is a six (6) months students
industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) taken in the third year of the degree program,
where the students go to various establishments related to their course of study.
SIWES is a skill Training program designed to expose and prepare students for the Real-life
work situation they are likely to meet after graduation. Participation in SIWES has become
necessary for the award of diploma and degree certificate in specific disciplines in most
higher learning institutions in the country under the government's education policy.
The aims and objective include:
• Providing an avenue to acquire skills and experience during their course of study
• Preparing student for similar work situations after graduation
• Exposing students to work methodologies and techniques in handling equipment and
machinery

2.2. Quality of company-based supervisor
My company-based supervisor for the period of my internship was Mr. Muyiwa Ojetunde, a
project manager and software engineer, who has worked with the company for over two
decades. There was a formal introduction on the first day, where he discussed his role and the
end goal for me as an intern, which is to be an expert in UI/UX, Product Design & Mgt,
thereby building amazing products that would have an impact on individuals globally.
Different team members were assigned to me periodically to take on specific areas. The
quality of the company-based supervision was exceptional. I worked on different projects
with constructive feedback during our weekly meetings.

2.3. Knowledge Gained

Mathematics & Computer science is a field that involves providing solutions to problems.
Having both as a course of study has given me the advantage of developing skillset in the
field of User interface & User experience design, Product design, Product Management,
Business Analytics and Project management which I explored and gained adequate
experience during my internship at Xputer Technologies.

2.3.1. Technical Experience Gained

⮚ User Interface Design - User interface (UI) design is the process designers use to
build interfaces in software or computerized devices, focusing on looks or style.
Designers aim to create interfaces that users find easy to use and pleasurable. UI
design refers to graphical user interfaces and other forms—e.g., voice-controlled
interfaces. This is the design of user interfaces for machines and software, such as
computers, home appliances, mobile devices, and other electronic devices, with the
focus on maximizing usability and the user experience.

⮚ User Experience Design - User experience (UX) design is the process design teams
use to create products that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users. This
involves the design of the entire process of acquiring and integrating the product,
including aspects of branding, design, usability and function. The UX designer role is
to make a product or service usable, enjoyable, and accessible. While many
companies design user experiences, the term is most often associated with digital
design for websites and apps.
⮚ User Experience Writing - A user experience (UX) writer creates copy for apps,
websites, and other digital products that help users navigate the product. Like UX
designers, a UX writer might test several versions of their work, conduct user
research, and interact heavily with product teams as they find the best ways to create
useful copy.

⮚ Product Design - Product design is the process designers use to blend user needs with
business goals to help brands make consistently successful products. Product
designers work to optimize the user experience in the solutions they make for their
users and help their brands by making products sustainable for longer-term business
needs. A very broad coefficient and effective generation and development of ideas
through a process that leads to new products. Thus, it is a major aspect of new product
development.

⮚ Product Management - Product management is an organizational function within a

company dealing with new product development, business justification, planning,
verification, forecasting, pricing, product launch, and marketing of a product or
products at all stages of the product lifecycle. A product manager is the person who
identifies the customer need and the larger business objectives that a product or
feature will fulfill, articulates what success looks like for a product, and rallies a team
to turn that vision into a reality.

⮚ Product Development - Product development is the complete process of delivering a

new product or improving an existing one for customers. The customers can be
external or internal within a company. The objective is to ensure that the new or
enhanced product satisfies a real customer need and helps the company reach business
goals. In business and engineering, new product development covers the complete
process of bringing a new product to market, renewing an existing product or
introducing a product in a new market. A central aspect of NPD is product design,
along with various business considerations.

⮚ Competitive Analysis - A competitive analysis provides strategic insights into the

features, functions, flows, and feelings evoked by the design solutions of your
competitors. By understanding these facets of competitors' products, you can
strategically design your solution with the goal of making a superior product and/or
experience. Competitor analysis allows UX designers to find out if there are any gaps
in the market. For example, through your research, you may discover a feature that
your competitors' products do not have. Imagine you identify a feature that would
help an underserved market, let us say students in this case.
⮚ Market Research - Market research is defined as the process of evaluating the
feasibility of a new product or service, through research conducted directly with
potential consumers. This method allows organizations or businesses to discover their
target market, collect and document opinions and make informed decisions. While
market research is oriented around selling customers products, UX focuses on the
interaction between customers and products. This information helps to inform design
solutions, which are followed up with iterative testing to ensure the product or service
is aligned with users' expectations and needs.

⮚ User Research - User research is the methodic study of target users including their
needs and pain point, so designers have the sharpest possible insights to work with to
make the best designs. User researchers use various methods to expose problems and
design opportunities and find crucial information to use in their design process. Doing
so, they reveal valuable information which can be fed into the design process. See
why UX research is a critical part of the UX design process.

2.3.2 Soft skills Gained

⮚ Collaboration & Teamwork -This is the process of two or more people, entities or
organizations working together to complete a task or achieve a goal. When
developing a product, it is not done by an individual. It is important to collaborate
with other team members to develop amazing products which I did.

⮚ Problem Solving - Problem-solving is the act of defining a problem; determining the

cause of the problem; identifying, prioritizing, and selecting alternatives for a
solution; and implementing a solution. This was a skill I built on every project I
worked on, especially when I encountered a bug or menace.

⮚ Communication - Quality communication in the workplace can eliminate

unnecessary problems and promote better performance. The ability to communicate
effectively in the workplace can increase overall productivity and create a strong
team. Having learnt that when teams fail to communicate effectively, the results are
detrimental to the company. I therefore ensured that proper communication was made
during my internship experience to ensure smooth planning and progression.

⮚ Time management - Time management is the process of planning and exercising

conscious control of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase
effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity. I ensured I used my time effectively
thereby giving myself the "choice" on spending or managing activities at my own
time and expediency.

⮚ Research skills - Research skills are necessary for the workplace for several reasons,
including that they allow individuals and companies to: Identify problems that are
hindering performance or the ability to complete tasks. Identify the needs of a
company's target customer to better meet those needs through products and services.

⮚ Adaptability - Adaptability is a person's ability to adjust to changes in their

environment. Practicing adaptability may include how you are able to respond quickly
to changes, Adaptability expands your capacity to handle change, no matter how
serious it might be. Instead of throwing away your energy trying to change your
circumstance, you will change yourself right from within, thus making you thrive in
whatever situation you find yourself in.

⮚ Interpersonal Skills - Interpersonal skills are the skills we use every day when we
communicate and interact with other people, both individually and in groups. A social
skill is any competence facilitating interaction and communication with others where
social rules and relations are created, communicated, and changed in verbal and
nonverbal ways.

Chapter 3: Application of Knowledge Gained and Contributions.
In this chapter, there are brief discussions on the application of knowledge gained, challenges
and contributions made. It focuses on how I applied the gained knowledge to my field of
study, educational career, the goals of the company of engagement and the larger society. Its
summaries how SIWES contributed to bridging the gaps in theoretical and practical
knowledge and the culture of my company of engagement. This chapter also reviews the
challenges I encountered as a student and my contributions to the company of engagement.

3.1.1 Application of Knowledge Gained

The knowledge gained during the period of my industrial training is certainly one that has
made an impact in all areas of my life. My SIWES program has gifted me with a lot of
Knowledge and has given me a broader understanding of how Mathematics can be combined
with Computer Science to build solutions to problems i.e., building both digital and physical
products. I have been able to apply the Knowledge and experience I gained in problem-
solving to the real world because in every organization there are problems. With my
knowledge of solving problems.

3.1.2 Students’ Field of Study and Educational Career

Industrial Mathematics-Computer Science, my course of study, has given me the upper hand
in experiencing the best of both worlds and has given me a large area of Computer Science
and Mathematics; picking a career from these two very vast courses has been very troubling;
any field of Computer Science and the training was an excellent platform to select my career
of specialization.
This industrial training has broadened my understanding of what I want to major in as a
career path, Product design and management. I learnt and applied the core fundamentals of
product design and management within my internship period including on demand skills of
user interface and user experience design. Also applying knowledge from relevant courses,
MAT 314, MAT114, MAT333 and MAT319

3.1.3 The Goals of the Company of Engagement

I have been able to apply myself to the company's goals of connecting people and improving
lives. Using my knowledge in computer science, I have been able to give ideas that have
improved the efficiency of how the company connects people.
I worked on numerous projects assigned by my company supervisors. These projects fall in
the industry line of designing accounting ERP Systems, mobile interfaces for government
industries, transportation, health and website for top brands.
3.1.4 The Larger Society
Technology is of the essence for growth in society, and the Nigerian community is no
exception. With my gained skills and fueled interest in technology, I would make an impact
that solves problems of the society.
The ability to identify problems and solve them through building products is a major
contribution to society. The impact of product development can be seen in all sectors of the
economy

3.1.5 Bridging the Gaps in Knowledge

The industrial training experience is an exposure to witness the importance of the theoretical
knowledge taught at schools and imbibe a practical overview of it all. SIWES is a vital
experience needed for students' exposure to relevant practical skills. The employment market
craves students who have gained both practical and theoretical knowledge. A student can
barely survive on just theoretical knowledge. The labor market demands students with
practical skills and experience. Industrial Training has shaped my career growth mindset and
the importance of theoretical knowledge taught in school. SIWES provided an avenue to gain
skills and experience, exposed work methodologies and techniques and bridged the gap
between theory and practical knowledge. Hence the importance of the emphasis on the
participation of the SIWES among students.

3.1.6 Culture of the Organization

An organization’s work culture influences the performance of employees. Xputer
Technologies is an organization that builds web, mobile and desktop applications for
enterprises and individuals. Its core values are extra-mile, teamwork, accuracy, speed,
integrity, innovation and they are seen in activities engaged in the company. Great Things
have never come from our comfort zones, but we work to make life easier for you.
Xputer Technology ensures all employees are working in a safe and convenient condition.
Health, safety and security are aspects that are greatly considered. There was an
organizational restructuring that happened between August 2021 and the company made
efforts by providing interns and full-time employees with the essential tools and information
to work from home during the pandemic. Cyberspace understands how its employees'
wellbeing affects their deliverables and, as such, takes utmost priority in that.

3.2. Challenges
Challenges are bound to occur when moved to a new environment. It is in those situations
that we find a means to shine and develop ourselves.
3.2.1 Technical Challenges Encountered
During my industrial training, various projects were assigned to me, and some problems were
encountered due to unfamiliarity with the concept of the projects and short time limit.

⮚ Project Requirement - A few projects given had vague requirements such as

building an Accounting ERP System. Hence, the need to research how a typical
Accounting ERP looks and how it can be designed to suit the need of the user and
have an impact in the industry.

⮚ Communication – This was a major issue when working with clients & partners. At
the beginning of the project, we would delegate tasks and have feedbacks from each
other at the end of the week. I noticed this was slowing down our progress as we
would push the work over to the weekend. I suggested we have more frequent
checkups, where we would give reports and tackle errors together.

⮚ Time Management – Certain projects have short and impromptu timelines. The team
and I followed the techniques from the SCRUM & AGILE methodology in executing
these projects. We would plan, design, implement and test each of the entities. We
always had something to show for demo presentations. And this also helped to
maximize our productivity.

⮚ Transportation – Due to the fact that my place of residence is far from my place of
industrial attachment, the cost of transportation was expensive, and I had to spend
long hours on the road especially when going home.

3.2.2 Challenges faced by the company

Due to the organizational restructuring of the company, we had to work virtually for 3 weeks.
When we were working physically on-site, we would discuss freely with our mentors about
issues arising, areas of knowledge and solutions to problems. Going virtually, I suggested we
have regular group calls to discuss issues, brainstorm together, and must do deep research on
the problems we could not solve on hand.
3.2.3 Projects Identified
During my industrial training, I worked on various projects, designing various interfaces and
developing products for different sectors of the economy. While building these projects I was
able to apply knowledge from relevant courses, MAT 314, MAT114, MAT333 and MAT319,
thereby deepening my understanding of the practical knowledge of the course in product
development.

Chapter 4: Conclusion
This work has been performed in partial fulfilment for the award of a Bachelor of Science
Degree. The main objective of the SIWES programme is to provide an avenue for students to
apply theoretical knowledge to real-work applications. This training has exposed me to
diverse opportunities, improving both my technical and interpersonal skills. I am grateful for
SIWES for exposing me to a career in Product design and development management and
providing an opportunity to gain real work experience.
My appreciation goes to Xputer Technologies, the UI/UX & Product management
