Title
EXPERIMENT 3
PHOTOELECTRIC EFFECT

Introduction

The photoelectric effect is a phenomena in which light causes electrons to be expelled

from a metal's surface. Photoelectrons are the electrons that are expelled. It's worth
noting that the frequency of the light incident on the metal's surface affects the
emission of photoelectrons and the kinetic energy of the expelled photoelectrons.
Photoemission is the term used to describe the process by which photoelectrons are
emitted from the metal's surface owing to the action of light.

Objectives

• To establish a link between the maximal kinetic energy of photoelectrons expelled

from a certain metal and the frequency of incoming light.
• To compare different metals' threshold frequency (fo).

Materials

1. Perform the experiment/simulation on Virtual Lab Photoelectric Effect. Screenshot

the results as simulated data to be used in the discussion.

Procedure

2. For the following problems, except for the type of light, maintain all variables
constant.
3. On the electromagnetic spectrum, move the slider to many higher frequencies,
near the UV area. What modifications, if any, take place?
4. On the electromagnetic spectrum, move the slider to the right, towards the
infrared region. What modifications, if any, take place?
5. Find the lowest light frequency that still generates photoelectrons in sodium
metal. For better control, you may utilize the slider or type in
6. Select another metal from the Options menu and repeat #3. Then pick a third
metal that isn't the same as the first two. Are the answers identical? The
threshold frequency, fo, for each metal is calculated in steps c and d. A
material will only display a photoelectric effect if the frequency of the light is
greater than a specific minimum value, as Lenard discovered.
