1. Define a thermodynamic system. Differentiate between open system, closed system, and an
isolated system.
Thermodynamic System – A system refers to the quantity of matter or certain volume in space
chosen for study.
Closed system- also known as control mass is a system where there is no transfer of
matter across the boundary, meaning no mass can cross within the boundary.
Open system- also known as control volume is a system which there is a flow of matter
trough the boundary.
Isolated system- a system in which neither mass nor energy across boundaries and it is
not influenced by the surroundings.
4. Explain the following terms: (i) State, (ii) Process, and (iii) Cycle
State- of a system represents condition of the system and the condition of the system is identified
by properties. The system is said to be in a state if all of the properties of the system are fixed.
Process- is the change of state, the series of states through which the system passes during the
process is known as path of process.
Cycle- if the final state is the same to initial state for a cycle, change property is zero.
5. Briefly explain zeroth law of thermodynamics.
If two bodies are each in thermal equilibrium with some third body, then they are also
equilibrium with each other. It simply says that for example if a=b and b=c, then a=c
