management strategies it uses. Focus on describing what it’s

doing that’s unusual or effective or both.

Walmart:
Walmart was founded in 1962, and now it is one of the largest retailers in the world. The strong
points of Walmart are high levels of customer service, strong inventory management, purchasing
economies, etc. During 1980s and 1990s, Walmart has rapidly expanded in its home market

International expansion of Walmart is a critical part of its strategy because:

1. The sales of Walmart have become saturated in its home market. In order to earn more
profits, Walmart had to enter into new markets
2. There were many emerging markets with untapped potential. These markets were very
attractive for Walmart’s expansion in order to increase its sales.
3. Expanding internationally poses many challenges too. Which markets to choose, how to
operate in these markets, etc. are the major decisions which Walmart has to make. All
these decisions have to be critically evaluated.
4. Walmart was able to succeed in many countries but face issues in few countries in Europe.

The issues it faced are:

 In Europe, it first entered Germany by acquiring two different retail chains. These companies
were based in two different cities. It became very difficult to manage these two, as Walmart had
very limited infrastructure in Europe.
 Another barrier was the language. German is the language of Germany. Top management
positions were filled with U.S. expatriates, who didn’t know German. This made it very difficult
for them to manage the operations.
 Suppliers in Europe were not familiar with the information systems and inventory management
used by Walmart.
 Also, Walmart faced resistance from government regarding the price war.

Walmart was able to succeed in Canada and Latin America for the following
reasons:
 It entered Mexico first with a 50-50 joint venture. It partnered with a local firm. This venture
helped Walmart in managing the cultural and income differences. Walmart was able to learn
about the market with the help of the local firm

 Then, based on the learning from the Mexican market, it entered Brazil with a joint venture
strategy again. It reinforced its knowledge in Brazil
 Based on the knowledge gained from the experiences in Brazil and Mexico, Walmart was able to
open wholly owned stores in Argentina. With the learnings from various markets and years of
experience, Walmart was able to expand rapidly in Latin Americas.
 Walmart entered Canada by acquiring the local stores. Immediately, Walmart restructured these
stores using those practices which were a huge success in the United States. As a result,
Canadian operations were a huge success.

Go to the International Standards Organization

Web site [www.iso.org] and look for information
on the ISO 9000 standards. Write a report
describing the types of things organizations need to
do to achieve ISO certification
It should be clearly stated, that ISO 9001 is not a group that organizations can just “join up” to. It is a
certification that must be achieved as part of a specific auditing process.

To get ISO 9001 certified, you have to:

 Build and implement a quality management system in accordance with the principles of the
latest ISO 9001 standard
 Have an audit performed by a Certified Body (CB or Registrar) to assess the performance of your
QMS against the latest ISO 9001 standard.
 If you are successful, the certificate will need to be recertified after three years (and every
subsequent three years) to make sure you’re still up to standard (as well as any new changes to
the standard)
