MANUAL

JULY 2022
July 2022
GENERAL:
To have CLARITY that our role as coaches is GETTING STUDENTS
SPEAKING WITH FLUENCY IN 21 MONTHS OR LESS SO THEY GET B1-B2 IN
TOEFL.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
Weekly Objective must be clear for the coach and trainees and we
have to work to achieve it. Do whatever it takes to make it happen!
Focusing our energy to have great results in our classes.
Accurate feedback and score to be given, Pass 4-6 students to the
front.
Trainees will be able to retell stories or share personal information in
a more natural way.

WHY WILL WE HAVE THIS TRAINING? To make sure that we are all on the
same page regarding core processes and delivering 5-star classes.

GENERAL GOALS:
BY 12/31/2026: 20,000 active students.
80% of our kids B1-B2 TOEFL
ISSUE
Trainees are struggling on developing their skills to tell stories with
fluency and confidence due to lack of knowledge on grammar,
vocabulary or mentality.

GOAL:
Trainees will be able to say 4-6 sentences with fluency and confidence in
the present, past and future tenses and to ask and answer "YES/NO" and
"WH" questions (Do whatever it takes to make it happen!)

WHO IS IN CHARGE?
The whole academic Team (Learning, Coaches, Coordinators, Evaluators,
Robins, QA department, Trainers and Upper Management).

1. SPANISH USAGE:
DAY 1: ADAPTATION
When we take over a new class, we don't know the kids, their performance nor their
comprehension skills, going 100% English on your first day might be a huge impact on students
and it could make them take longer to adapt to you. A little more Spanish is allowed on the
first couple of days (depending on the class). This won't affect your QA as long as it's not an
abuse and it gives you results.

2. ROAD RUNNER
The coach is not expected to be talking all the time, pauses are necessary for kids to process
the information and produce better. (i.e.: 5,4,3,2,1 / go! go! go! etc.)

3. RESULTS ORIENTED MINDSET

Our QA form won't be focused on processes but results, therefore the coach will be allowed to
use a little more Spanish during grammar or change the practice activity. Do whatever it takes
to make it happen!

Reference: Give options / Correcting on spot (technicalities that won't represent an impact)

4. APPROACH
No baby talk. Don't underestimate them.

5. BOOSTERS
From now on you'll see only 1 slide containing a list of boosters as reminder, but
slides are now marked with a Booster sticker so whenever you see it, you do a
booster (mostly to pick participants)
Let’s remember and review WHO we are as a company, our mission, and
our CORE VALUES (DNA).

CLEAR OBJECTIVES
We will make sure that our trainees have clarity regarding their objectives.

WEEKLY GOAL
Throughout the week you are going to set the expectation about the evaluation on
Friday (always showing the big star in the WF)
● Monday — Focus on grammar (complete answers -making sure grammar tense
is well taught- and trainees understand yes/no questions) If trainees are having a
hard time understanding instructions (bottom class) you are allowed to use Spanish
during the grammar part as you see fit (no translation, it can be 50/50 English-
Spanish)
● Tuesday - Reinforce grammar, trainees should make Yes/no questions and
introduce WH questions (the coach should ask questions and make sure trainees
answer and understand)
● Wednesday and Thursday — polish grammar and encourage kids to give
energy.
● Friday – Evaluations (Different flow)

START YOUR CLASS WITH CONTROL: POSTURE
It's important to keep a good posture throughout the class as this
gives us authority but also lets us spread energy. The coach must be
sitting on a firm position and the space must be lightned so trainees
can see the coach clearly.

STEP #1: SET THE TONE AND WELCOME

This is one of the most important steps that we will implement: to bond
with our trainees, to get a real connection with them.
Call them by their names: Get trainees names and make sure you
call trainees by their names.
Make sure you SPELL their names correctly.
Ask about: hobbies, family, favorite food, colors, sports, etc.
Engaging the whole class and getting rapport between trainees
asking them: raise your hand if you also like X movie, or series,
soccer team, player, etc.

Start setting the tone by saying affirmations with the kids.

"Today is a great day!" "I learn a lot today!" "I love learning English!"
etc.

STEP #2: ICE BREAKER

This can be either a random question or a quick review of previous
grammar tenses.
STEP #3: HOMEWORK CHECK
The coach will quickly check the question/task assigned the day before (3-4
trainees)
NO HOMEWORK: Coach shouldn't scold trainees but motivate them to investigate or
practice more so they can reach better English level.

STEP #4 ALERT! EXAM (SELL THE IDEA OF THE STAR EVALUATION)

BIG SUPER STAR is our final reward if trainees say 4-6 sentences with fluency and
energy. This must be reinforced during the whole class to motivate their participation.
This slide also includes weekly goal.

STEP #5 MENTAL TRAINING: Affirmations and relax, also MT MUST BE PERFORMED 5-7
TIMES DURING THE WHOLE CLASS. Do it with intensity, A tip is to do it after completing
each activity of the class (warm up, speaking, grammar, etc).
Remember to include growth mindset affirmations:
Mistakes make me better.
My brain gets stronger when I practice.

STEP #6 VOCABULARY
It must be taught by using TPR and repetitions, every day new vocabulary words will be
added and used during A/F these new words will be marked with a red sticker to easily
identify them so kids can copy them.
STEP #7 GRAMMAR REVIEW
Grammar explanation with the following elements: usage, keyword
and structure.
TIPS during grammar explanation: to have ready 3 extra examples
with relatable situations, using biomechanics and use visual
resources.
Coach gives 1-2 examples and students repeat. Coach must push for
stars individually
Trainees must write down examples (1 min)
Coach does a QA Check. We can use: circle of pressure with a 10
second pushing techinque, contests.
Coaches must ask if trainees have questions or doubts regarding the
topic that we explain. Example: “What questions do you have?”

STEP #8 PRACTICE
This is normally an activity related to grammar use (listening, writting,
matching images, completing sentences, etc) and the coach does a quick
QA verification.

STEP #9 BREAK
Timer can be projected so class returns on time.

STEP #10 CHAMPION'S REMINDER

Always build growth mentality. This can be read by one trainee or ask them
to read all at once.
STEP #11 AUTOMATIC FLUENCY
We have Day 1 Flow and Days 2,3 and 4 Flow
STEP #12 HOMEWORK
The coach will assign something to "investigate" so answers can be checked
next day. In here, coach will display PW screen just to push for completion.
1. SET THE TONE AND WELCOME
2. HOMEWORK CHECK
3. ALERT
4. MENTAL TRAINING + MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH
5. OPEN GRAMMAR REVIEW
6. AUTOMATIC FLUENCY (Results day)
7. BREAK (Optional) Break is optional on day 5
8. CHAMPION'S REMINDER
9. AUTOMATIC FLUENCY (Results day)
10. HOMEWORK

AUTOMATIC FLUENCY
(RESULTS CHECK) FLOW
1. START WITH PERSONAL QUESTIONS (how are you?
where are you from? what's your favorite.../ Spiral
learning questions depending on the level)
2. MAIN QUESTION (can you tell me about COCO?
etc.)
3. PROBING QUESTIONS (Y/N and -WH)
4. WRAP UP (Congrats, score, quick feedback)
5. Get another trainee to repeat the process.
We can use as many emojis as we want to reward kids for
their participation, as long as we sell the idea of the BIG
SUPER STAR at the end of the class and for their evaluation.
“Every time teachers give feedback to students, they convey messages that
affect students’ opinions of themselves, their motivation and their
achievement.” – Carol Dweck

PRAISE is a good thing and it’s something that we have to do in every class but
we have to be careful about praising kids’ intelligence or abilities and focus
more on the process and the effort that they put forth since it will help us to
develop growth mindset in our kids.

Kids with growth mindset tend to:

Believe that effort is a positive thing.
Believe that mistakes are part of the process.
Enjoy challenges.

Now, there are many things that can affect or improve the way we provide
feedback:
TONE OF VOICE: Our tone of voice has to be friendly but firm. Also, we have
to avoid baby talk (it can be helpful for babies’ language development but
we have to stop doing it when they reach 12 months of age) When we use
baby talk with kids, we are underestimating them and telling them that
they are not capable of achieving their goals.
SPECIFIC FEEDBACK: Giving vague praise such as “good job!” “that’s nice!”
“Excellent!” without attaching some idea of what they have done is
meaningless and it tells kids nothing about how they have approached a
task. Example:
- You told me an interesting sentence, good job!
- You did very well in your evaluation, you must have worked hard in
your study time!
- You told me the numbers from 1 to 10, good pronunciation!
AVOID COMMENTS LIKE: You are smart/super intelligent! Good boy! Clever
girl!
SANDWICH TECHNIQUE: use it to provide feedback (Good comment,
constructive comment, good comment)
STEP 1: KUDOS
Good energy! Good pronunciation! Great
smile! etc.

STEP 2: CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENT. (AOI

ORIENTED)
Is this correct? / Can you show me more
energy? / I think you can do it better if
you try again... etc.

STEP 3: KUDOS
Great effort! / I like your energy! /
You spoke really fast! / etc.

REMEMBER TO ALWAYS BUILD GROWTH MENTALITY.

IN CONCLUSION:
We MUST implement E4KIDS Core Processes, with GROWTH
MINDSET reminders before and after scoring our trainees
and we will have a new QA activity base on our trainee's
