What is the difference between…?

Equation: y=3x+2 Function: y = 3x+2

Input Output
-3 -7
-2 -4
-1 -1
0 2
BALANCE 1 5
If x = 2 , y=3x+2 Check: 2 8
Y = 3(2) + 2 8 = 3(2) + 2
Y = 8 8 = 8 MACHINE

Both sides are equal Process

What is a relation?
Relation is a set of any ordered pairs
Examples:
{(0, −5),(1, −4),(2, −3),(3, −2),(4, −1),(5, 0)}
{(–1, −7),(1, 0),(2, −3),(0, −8),(0, 5),(–2, −1)}
{(0,-3),(4,5),(5,7),(-2,-7), (-3,-9)}
What is a function?
Function is a set of ordered pairs (x,y) such that
NO Two ordered pairs have the same x-value
but different y
Examples:
1. {(0, −5),(1, −4),(2, −3),(3, −2),(4, −1),(5, 0)} F
2. {(0,-3), (4,5), (5,7), (-2,-7), (-3,-9)} F
3. {(2,5), (4,9), (6,13), (8,17), (10,21)} F
4. {(2,5), (2,9), (6,13), (6,17), (2,21)} NF
