THEORIES

THEORY X HERZBERG’S THEORY

THEORY Y
Herzberg's Motivation/
Two-Factor Theory

■ Herzberg’s Theory of Motivation tries to get o the root of motivation in

the workplace. This theory to help you get the best performance from
your team.
■ The two factors identified by Herzberg are motivators and hygiene factors
– Motivation factors- The presence of motivators causes employees to
work harder. They are found within the actual job itself
– Hygiene factors- The absence of hygiene factors will cause
employees to work less hard. Hygiene factors are not present in the
actual job itself but surround the job .
Factors of Herzberg’s Theory
Motivating factors
include
– Achievement
– Recognition
– The work itself
– Responsibility
– Advancement
– Growth:
Hygiene factors include:

– Company policies
– Supervision
– Relationships
– Work conditions
– Salary
– Status
– Security
The Four Stats
– High Hygiene and High Motivation -This is the ideal situation and the one which every
manager should strive for. Here, all employees are motivated and have very few grievances
– High Hygiene and Low Motivation -In this situation, employees have few grievances but
they are not highly motivated. An example of this situation is where pay and working
conditions are competitive but the work isn’t very interesting. Employees are simply there to
collect their salary.
– Low Hygiene and High Motivation -In this situation, employees are highly motivated but
they have a lot of grievances. A typical example of this situation is where the work is
exciting and really interesting but the pay and conditions are behind competitors in the same
industry
– Low Hygiene and Low Motivation -This is obviously a bad situation for an organization or
team to find itself in. Here, employees aren’t motivated and the hygiene factors are not up to
scratch
THEORY –X
&
THEORY - Y

This theory was given by McGregor in his book :

“ THE HUMAN SIZE OF ENTERPRISE”.

Theories X and Y have distinct approaches to motivating individuals.

THEORY X

■ The theory assumes that the person is naturally unmotivated and dislike
work and this encourages an authoritarian style of management.
■ As a result, they believe that team members must be constantly reminded,
rewarded, or penalized to ensure that they accomplish their jobs.
■ Managers and supervisors at various levels oversee and direct workers in
the Theory X approach. Thus management uses authoritarian style
leading to less delegation of authority.
■ These types of workers are less but in big organization this theory may be
needed and is unavoidable.
How to identify type –X worker

■ Avoid responsibility

■ Dislike work

■ Seeks job security

THEORY - Y

■ In this theory , it is assumed by the managers that employees

already enjoy their work and are internally motivated. Here
managers views the employees as a huge asset to the organization.

■ Employees here take the maximum responsibility of their work.

■ It has a pseudo democratic work environment.
