Course: State and Public Relations, Year I


Course Information:

The course is designed to help you use English language in more advanced academic settings and
everyday situations by developing your analytical and critical reasoning skills. It will also cover some
topics for your major of study as it will be based on professional English as well.
The course will meet twice a week, which will last for 15 weeks. The students’ evaluation will be based
on in class assessments and final exam.

Course Description and Objectives:

The course will cover all four skills of language learning: speaking, listening, writing and reading. It is
important to remember that all skills being an integral part of the language should be developed
systematically. By the end of the course, you will be able to use English more confidently in both
academic settings and everyday situations.

The main objective of the course is to enable the language learners to use English as a means of
communication. The course will help the students to take an active role in exchanging the information and
get easily involved in the conversation, produce written assignments, comprehend listening materials, to
develop fluency and strategies for language learning. The course will also provide the students with some
important skills necessary for their future professional life as well as the education.

Throughout the course, you will listen to and watch audio and video materials both inside and outside the
classroom and will be expected to respond to and interact with these in a variety of ways, such as by
answering questions, taking notes, or by giving your own opinions.

Speaking activities which will include presentations, debates, or group discussions will give you the
opportunity to practice spontaneous speech. Through these speaking activities, you will improve both
your confidence and the fluency of your speech, while practicing new vocabulary.

Students will be expected to do authentic readings. You will do different activities and presentations on
reading assignments. You will learn strategies to read efficiently, define the main meaning and do critical
analysis of the readings. Readings will be based on your professional interest and your field of study as
well.

Students will learn to develop writing skills. You will be taught how to organise your writing, edit it and
give feedback to your peers. Some tasks on academic writing strategies will be implemented as well.
Students will be assigned different activities on writing in class and outside the class.
Course policies:

Attendance at all classes is compulsory. Late arrivals will be marked as an absence. Students are
expected to come ready to the class and participate in all class activities. The students are responsible for
their misbehaviour in class. Mobile phones have to be turned off during the lesson. The students are
expected to respect each other as well as their instructor. Deadlines are not negotiable.

Contact Information:

Teachers and students will be using email as a primary source of communication. All important
information will be communicated with you through email. Please, therefore, make sure that you check
your email account regularly. You will also be expected throughout the academic year to write emails.
Please present your email in a proper way. Always include the subject of your email.

Attendance: 10 points

According to attendance policy, you must attend all classes. Failure to do so will result in the deduction of
points from the Attendance that is worth 10 points of your final grade.  You must arrive at the lesson on
time to avoid disruption of the class. If you leave the class without permission or do not return to class,
you will be marked as absent. In compliance with Azerbaijani legislation, instructors are required to
monitor attendance and inform the Dean’s office when the students miss classes. Azerbaijani legislation
mandates that the students who fail to attend 75% of classes will fail the course. If you miss 25 percent of
classes, you will be considered to have failed the course. If the student leaves the class and does not return
after 5 minutes, he will get absent. Moreover, significant amount of absences will result in lower
participation grade.

Speaking Project: 10 points

Throughout the course you will do different speaking activities (debates, pair work, role plays,
presentations) you will be assessed on 1 speaking task as a final speaking project. Your teacher will
assign you a topic and you will prepare either group or individual presentation. Presentations might be
based on your major of study.

Assessment I: 10 points

During the session you will do different listening activities. Some of them will be based on your
coursebook and some will come from authentic sources. You will be graded on one of those assignments
to check your listening ability.

Assessment II: 10 points

Assessment II will cover vocabulary and grammar. The session will cover different thematic topics
where you will learn new vocabulary. You will also be responsible for learning some academic
vocabulary or vocabulary related to your major of study.

Final Exam: 50 points

The exams will be comprehensive and cover everything what was taught during the term.

Course Objectives Intermediate Level:

 Listening: Students will learn how to predict the content, listen for main ideas and details, listen
between the lines and infer the meaning. Understand different levels of formality, distinguish the
argument and details and be able to give a short summary. Use appropriate functions to keep the
conversation going. Infer attitudes about accents from statements or emotions. Listen to
understand the speaker’s emotions. Identify opinion about accents. Identify contrasting
viewpoints in the listening. Differ the factual information from the opinion.

 Speaking : Speculate about the content of the units, express and defend opinion about identity
theft, offer advice for identity theft prevention, conduct role play, interview or hold a debate and
share personal opinion about crime, agree or disagree with the statements, lead a group
discussion, talk about solutions of the problem, present a plan to improve English, talk about
tourist destinations, discuss the pros and cons of tourism, hypothesize possible outcomes, make
suggestions, agree or disagree with statements using appropriate functions, relate personal goals
to future aspirations, outline an issue, hypothesize causes and outcomes, participate in simulations

 Reading: students will make and confirm predictions, identify main ideas and different types of
supporting details, scan and skim the text to understand the chronology, to locate specific
chronology, follow chronological sequence in a reading, categorize information from two texts,
identify the detailed examples, read critically, think critically and apply critical reading skills,
make inferences based on comprehension of the text, discuss and respond to the content of the
text orally and in writing, develop theme based vocabulary.

 Writing: students will identify correct paragraph structure, write a paragraph telling a story,
master the organization of writing; introduction, body, conclusion. Identify the thesis statement,
topic sentences, and supporting details in a text, evaluate effective supporting details, write an
opinion essay, use transitions of contrast to introduce a counter argument, write a contrast
paragraph with supporting details.

 Grammar: The lessons will cover the following grammar: modals of advice, future predictions
with if clauses, comparison of adverbs. Students will learn how to use targeted grammatical
structures meaningfully and appropriately, recognize modals of advice and understand their
function and correct use, use the appropriate modals to ask and give advice, learn about if in
predictions , make predictions about the future using the if-clause, use the correct form and
meaning of adverb comparison.
This is a tentative syllabus schedule, changes will be discussed and announced in the class.
