Welcome to the English 8 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Opinion-Marking Signals!


This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators
both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of

lesson for our learners and enhance their knowledge on Opinion-Marking Signals. Please

also to inform our learners to take some precautionary measures and some activities need

depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in

What I Need to Know

Introduction
Hello! How are you doing especially these quarantine days? What do you
feel about it?
You might be wondering about these questions but through your answers,
we can get your own opinion. This is our topic for today, sharing your opinion
using opinion-marking signals.

Opinion is about how a person thinks, feels, judges and perceives things
around him or her. His or her opinion might be affected by his personality, choice,
culture, age, profession and point-of-view as a whole. There are no right or wrong
opinions since everybody has his or her own stand on a certain topic and subject.

Further, we can use markers or signal words when expressing an opinion.


These signal words are very important to let others recognize that you are giving
your opinion. The main goal of this module is for you to learn and use opinion-
marking signals.

What’s In

In your previous lesson, you studied visual- verbal relationships illustrated


in tables, graphs, and information maps found in expository texts. After studying
relationships based on facts as shown in visual representation, it is also important
to learn how to share your own idea or opinion about a certain topic or on a given
information.

Thus, in sharing your ideas, you need to identify and be familiar with signal
words or markings. These markings will be presented to you as you go and explore
this module.

An opinion is a view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily
based on fact or knowledge. It is also important to know how to express facts and
opinions.

There are markings or signals that you need to be familiar with. Let’s now take
a look at some examples of the signal words and phrases being used that are used
to introduce a statement of fact or opinion.
