Introduction

Designing a flexible chair for the drawing studio in kyambogo university.

Overview

This chapter comprises of background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study,
specific objectives, research questions, research hypothesis ,scoop of study and significance of the
study.

Background of the study 2:2

The history of a chair is less evolutionary than it is cultural because the way we choose to sit ,and
what we choose to sit on says a lot about us, our values, our taste and the things we hold dear. A
chair is a seat, especially for one person, usually having four legs for support and a rest for the
back and often having rests for the arms.
The first chair to be invented was not a physical chair but a sculpture of one from the Cycladic
islands in the Aegean sea, dated to the period 2800-2700B.C according to the historical findings
made by Rybczynski Witold,a Russian architect. The figure depicts a musician play in ng a harp
while sitting in what looks like a typical kitchen chair with a straight on a four legged chair. By
the time of the ancient Egyptians sitting was a matter of status. Everyone sat on stools or on the
ground, but chairs with backs or arm rests were researched for the elite, something that has gone
out of existence.
The future of the chair lies somewhere between the monobloc, between a chair that can adopt to
the widest possible range postures and body sizes and an inexpensive chair for the masses.
An artists greatest dream is to have a comfortable working area, this includes the resting area,
this includes the resting area and the surface where he or she is working from. The nature of the
working area can affect the final work both positively and negatively.
The research proposal entitled designing a flexible chair for the drawing studio is a community
based proposal for the school of Art and Industrial design in kyambogo University. Kyambogo
university is a public University in Uganda ,located at kyambogo hill. It was founded in 2003 by
the universities and tertiary institution act 200l
The essence of the flexible chair is to create a larger surface for drawing for the students who can
not access the drawing boards during classes and also examination unlike the currently available
chairs which have a small surface which is only a resting area for the hand .This will not only
simplify the learner’s work but will also reduce on the stress of moving around with an extra
burden of carrying a drawing board besides other tools and materials
