Cell Analogy — Veterinary Clinic

For my analogy, I chose to compare an animal cell to a Veterinary Clinic

I’ll start off with the Cell Membrane. This is what allows materials to come in and out of the cell.
It filters each material and will not let any unwanted materials to pass through. The doors of my
Clinic would represent this organelle best. It’s a monitored entrance where customers can come
in and out. If someone were to try to come inside out of the clinics hours, they would be denied.

Next is the Cytoplasm, which is a jelly-like substance made up of mostly water. It holds the
organelles and keeps the shape of the cell. I compared this to the veterinary building itself. It
holds all the customers, workers, animals, and materials safely.

The powerhouse of the cell… the mitochondria. The purpose of this organelle is to create
chemical energy used to properly operate literally everything inside the cell. I believe that the
workers and people who run the clinic would be a fit for this because they keep the business
going. They’re always working and making sure everything in the building is operating correctly
and smoothly.

Now the nucleus, the brain of the cell. This is where messages are sent out to each organelle to
tell them what proteins to make or what materials to allow in to the cell. I think that the staff of
business office would be the best fit for this description. It’s where employees would have
meetings and discuss issues. This would make the manager the owner of the clinic. They are
responsible for making final decisions and reporting what they want from their workers.

The rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum are two organelles attaches to the nucleus. The
smooth ER creates lipids and packages larger molecules, while the rough contains ribosomes
which creates proteins to be transported around the cell. Transport vehicles would be a good
comparison because they transport animals and materials that are necessary to keep the
business running smoothly.

Ribosomes are protein-creating organelles that translate messages from the nucleus. They can
be found in the rough endoplasmic reticulum, as well as around the cell in the cytoplasm. The
proteins they create are used around the cell. The analogy I’ve created for this would be the pet
food and medication. In order to keep the animals healthy, they must be fed a good, regular diet
and given proper medication when needed.

The Golgi Apparatus is an organelle whose purpose is to collect the proteins from the ribosomes
and add other things such as lipids. I made the connection between the Golgi and a schedule
board. Having this near the staff office (or nucleus in our analogy) is beneficial for employees
because it keeps them organized and prepared for the work they have ahead of them, just like
how the Golgi prepares and organized proteins.

Lysosomes are like the cleaning crew of the cell. They gather unwanted materials and break

them down with digestive enzymes and their acidic interior, keeping the whole cell clean. The
janitor represents this because their responsibility in any facility is to keep it clean and dispose
of trash.

Centrioles are cylinder-like organelles that help cells to divide. They attach to each piece of DNA
and pull them apart to create two brand new cells. These were one of the harder organelles to
create an analogy for, so this is the best I’ve got. A front desk computer is used for filing in
information and documents needed for each customer. A copy of this file can be downloaded,
and sent to customers as a receipt or to doctors for all kinds of necessary medical information.

Let’s say I wanted to turn this animal cell analogy into a plant cell analogy. What I would need to
do is remove the Lysosomes and Centrioles, and add a Cell wall, large vacuole, and chloroplast
organelles.

The cell wall allows for proper structure and stability to the cell. It’s located right outside the cell
membrane and has a rigid texture. The cell walls in my Veterinary clinic would be the exterior of
the building. It’s sturdy concrete walls and foundation keep the building sturdy.

A large vacuole takes up about half of the cells volume, and is used to store food, water, and
different minerals. It regulates water percentage and is the reason for the rigidity of the cell wall.
I chose to use the animal cages as a representative. They give the animals a place to stay while

they recover and wait for those owners to come pick them up. The amount of animals in the
cages also fluctuates, just as the amount of water in a cell does.

The last organelle is the Chloroplast. It’s where photosynthesis takes place: absorbing sunlight,
and turning that into sugars, which can then be sent to the mitochondria to be made into
chemical energy. This was also a very difficult one to find an analogy for. Customer feedback is
very important for businesses. It allows for improvements within the foundation. Suggestions
from feedback can be applied making the job easier and giving the customers a better
experience.
