Theory 2 – People who live in marginal climate regions have lower levels of wellbeing because of the difficulties
faced in growing enough food or finding enough fresh water. These activities take so much time and effort; for
example, spending hours each day collecting water from the nearest water source, that there is no time left to develop
ways to move beyond simple survival. Supporters of this theory point to desert regions in
Northern Africa and Central Asia as evidence to support their case.
