Team building
aboard the Historic Vessel VEGA
An introduction to this unique experience

B elonging to a team is the result of feeling part of something larger than

yourself. Team building activities on board the 118 year old Norwegian
built Historic Vessel VEGA result in experiences which change the way teams
face challenges and take advantage of opportunities. This builds stronger teams,
demonstrates the importance of each member to the teams overall success, improves
decision making abilities, increases productivity, and reduces production/ quality
control problems. Individuals develop a new appreciation for the importance of their
collaboration as a part of the overall “Big Picture”. Focusing on teamwork through
specific problem solving exercises also evokes feelings of thought, anticipation, fear,
anxiety, fun, happiness and laughter, while helping to break down barriers and build
confidence.

There is no such thing

as a “One size fits all” training program.

T he challenges each company face, as well as their goals

and objectives, are as different and individualistic as the
companies themselves. To be effective a team building program must be
custom tailored to the precise demands of the company and the people
participating. Creating success is a combined effort where the
company establishes the goals to be achieved and together
with the trainers craft a proactive response that will
dynamically guide participants
to the achievement of
those objectives. Properly
prepared and implemented
these sessions become long lasting,
life changing, experiences for their
participants - and highly rewarding for
their companies.

The framework for a typical one

day team building event is outlined
below. Our typical group size
is between 8-12. This is only an
exploration of possibilities, each
program is custom
tailored to meet
the precise
requirements
of each group
and company. The final structure
will depend on times for arrival and
departure as well as agreed upon
objectives.

Short team building

activities and instructions
Exercises that develop group cohesion
and foster a sense of accomplishment

v Teams are formed and structure themselves. Each team

appoints an “Inspector” whose job it is to observe and analyze
the teams performance and attract the teams attention to possible
improvements as well as the effectiveness of improvements.

v Each team is introduced to the basics of line handling and how to the
sails it will be responsible for

v Teams design their own mission, vision and strategies to accomplish the
mission taking into account the various strengths of the teams members.

v Teams hoist and set their sails several times analyzing after each
attempt how well they have performed and how they can improve their
performance through better team work. Emphases is placed on individual
responsibility to the teams overall success and how it relates to a
production / quality control environment.

More complex team challenge
Activities which encourage participants to stretch themselves beyond perceived limits

v Team members are mixed so that they are now working different sails with at least
one person from each old team remaining to transfer experiences on how best to
manage the new sail or task.

v Teams set and furl their sail several times and then compare experiences with the
last team and explore ways to improve on performance.

v Full crew meeting where each member contributes to analyzing the teams overall
performance from an improvement point of view , share experiences, and explore
ways of improving performance.

v Teams then restructure themselves for the best performance at each task. We
encourage the teams not to be static, but to automatically restructure themselves
“on the fly” according to the tasks at hand and who is best suited for each task.

Break for lunch

Real Sailing
Learning that for the goals of the ‘big picture’, all have a trusted role

v Teams help unmoor the vessel and set sail for a short cruise where teams set
and trim their sails, furl them, and change sail combinations.

v New, unfamiliar, sails are introduced and teams must face

the challenge of setting these new sails along with several
“surprise” problems that must be overcome.

v Return to the dock and debrief

Team bonding
v Drinks and finger food served on board.
Participants relax and interact on a more
personal social level comparing experiences
and observations.

T he program above is designed around a one day venue in Singapore.

There are many variations available ranging from short one day programs
in places like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta to the full 3 day version in
Langkawi, Malaysia. Just as each companies objectives are different each team
building program must be custom tailored to meet those objectives. Please feel free
to contact us with your ideas and objectives. You will find the VEGA team open,
responsive, and ready to do our best for you.

The historical Vessel VEGA is not a commercial enterprise. These team building
programs are produced as a means of providing assistance in the form of educational
and medical supplies as well as basic farming equipment to the isolated island
communities we support. 100% of the funds realized from the corporate donations
these programs attract go directly to support VEGA’s missions of mercy. As one
CEO put it,”not only are we building a more effective company team, but by doing
so are also assisting an extremely efficient method of providing humanitarian
assistance to those who need it most”.
