Jog Start of Sundyne Pumps and Compressors

EFFECTIVE : OCTOBER 2001 Rev: A

Following is a re-issuance of our Field Engineering Bulletin dated October 1982 for further clarification of the
Sundyne position on this subject. This clarification will be implemented into the Sundyne Pump and Compressor
installation and operating (I&O) manuals as they are revised for re-printing.

All Sundyne pump and compressor equipment with an internal oil pump is designed with the ability to be
successfully started without jogging. This is of course totally dependent on the completion of the following actions
by the user: 1) the gearbox has been properly filled with lubricating fluid; 2) the direction of motor (driver) rotation is
correct; and 3) the gearbox oil pressure requirement is achieved when the input shaft is rotated at design input
speed. The lubricating fluid used in the Sundyne gearbox must meet the requirements of Field Engineering Bulletin
40.2.04. The direction of driver rotation is verified by bump starting of the main electric motor (disconnected from
the gearbox if possible) with visual confirmation that the motor shaft rotation is in the required direction as shown on
the unit. Gearbox oil pressure requirements are defined for the respective product in their I&O manuals. For
installations using fully automated starting controls, the usage of an auxiliary/external lube oil priming pump with a
permissive start pressure switch is recommended.

Filling of Gearbox with Lubricating Fluid

The following actions must occur at the time of initial installation of a new Sundyne product or following every
re-installation after maintenance having occurred that required the draining/removal of the gearbox lubricating fluid.

Remove the gearbox fill-vent plug and the filter-breather cap from the fill opening on the gearbox. Fill the
reservoir with clean lubricating fluid in accordance with the Gearbox Lubricant Recommendation in Field
Engineering Bulletin 40.2.04 until the fluid level is at the sight glass level ‘maximum line’. Lube system capacity
will vary with the usage of a heat exchanger and piping configuration. The gearbox holds approximately 7
quarts (6.6 liters). Replace the filter breather cap on the fill-opening fitting and replace the fill-vent plug. If an
auxiliary lube pump is not used, remove the plug on top of the oil filter manifold and fill the oil filter and the heat
exchanger with oil.

Verify that gearbox lube oil pressure will be achieved by priming the lube oil system and expelling all of the air
that is potentially trapped. Priming can be achieved by either operating the (optional) auxiliary lube oil-priming
pump or by jogging the main driver connected to the gearbox (this should occur by the second or third jog—
each of 2-3 seconds duration). NOTE: jogging is only required for initial installation or following re-
installation after maintenance and re-filling of gearbox lubricant or for units remaining idle for periods
of time greater than nine months. Jogging is also used to verify proper direction of rotation for the main
driver. Jogging is a prudent, conservative activity that can be quite useful to ensure long service life of the
Sundyne high-speed products by providing a fluid film of lubricant on the surfaces of bearings and gears. Add
oil as necessary through the fill fitting until the oil level stabilizes in the sight glass.

Operation of Sundyne Products

After successful completion of the gearbox filling procedure as defined above, the Sundyne product can now be
routinely started without the need of jogging. This would include unit switch over of main/stand-by installations,
start-up of idle reserve units, start-up of emergency units, etc. Non-operating units should be started/used every 9-
12 months on an alternating basis.

Auxiliary Lube System Operation

For non-automated unit startup—energize the auxiliary lube pump motor and allow the pump to operate at least
thirty seconds with a minimum of 5 psig (0.35 kg/cm2) indication prior to starting the main driver.

Automated unit startup—when the unit control start button is activated, the auxiliary lube pump motor is energized.
When a 5 psig (0.35 kg/cm2) pressure switch verifies the lube oil pressure, a thirty-second timer and a forty-second
timer are started. The main drive motor starts at the end of thirty seconds. The auxiliary lube pump motor turns off
at the end of forty seconds. Note: it is not normally recommended to operate the auxiliary lube pump for an
extended period with the main driver operating. Certain application involving variable speed drivers (steam
turbines, variable speed electric motors, etc.) will require special lube oil systems where the auxiliary lube pump
may be required to run for an extended period of time.

Optional Heat Exchanger Operation

If the unit includes a heat exchanger, adjust the heat exchanger cooling flow to regulate the gearbox sump
temperature between 140° and 180° F (60° and 82° C). Approximately one hour of operation may be required to
stabilize the gearbox oil temperature.
