Gearbox Alignment Bolt Change

EFFECTIVE : JANUARY 2008 Rev: Orig

BACKGROUND

Repeated assembly and disassembly of the aluminum gearbox housings causes wear of the close tolerance
alignment bolt holes. The alignment bolts are harder than the aluminum and the thread diameter is only slightly
smaller than the hole. The threads wear away some aluminum every time the bolts are inserted or removed. As the
alignment bolt holes wear the gearbox bearing alignment become loose leading to degraded performance and
reliability.

IMPROVED ALIGNMENT BOLTS

New alignment bolts with a smaller thread diameter and a gentle lead in chamfer to the bolt shank were designed and
tested. The threads go easily through the alignment holes without removing material and the lead in chamfer makes
insertion of the shank easier as well. The hole size has not changed. The threads on the new alignment bolt are the
same as the other standard bolts in the gearbox split line, i.e. 1/2”-13. Therefore, the same nuts and washers will be
used on all of the bolts that hold the gearbox housings together. The material for the new bolts is “DJ” per
ME02AA01 which is a 300 series austenitic stainless steel. This is the same material as the standard bolts in the
gearbox split line.

PART NUMBER IMPACTS FOR FIELD UNITS

The new alignment bolts have the same form, fit and function as the old bolts with the exception that they require one
new washer and a new nut. The new washer and nut are for the threaded end of the bolt and are 1/2”. The washer
under the bolt head remains 5/8”.

There are two alignment bolts per gearbox. For vertical units the same part number is used in both positions.

For horizontal units one of the alignment bolts goes through a mounting bracket and must be longer. Therefore, both
bolt part numbers are not the same.

To ease the transition for spares orders there is a kit which includes a new bolt along with the correct washer and nut.
By ordering the kit the customer receives all the parts needed to change over to the improved bolt.

IMPLEMENTATION

This change is effective immediately however the existing stock of bolts will be depleted.
