Conceptual Question: Explain why a long pole is more beneficial to a tightrope
walker if the pole droops (in the principle of rotational). (5 points)
- Balancing on a tightrope is difficult. However, with the help of the pole, the
tightrope walker was able to maintain their balance. The pole is beneficial to
them as their rotational inertia increases because it gives them stability on the
tightrope. According to the First Newton’s Law of Inertia, “an object at rest tends
to remain at rest, and an object that is spinning tends to spin with a constant
angular velocity, unless it is acted on by a nonzero net torque or there is a
change in the way the object's mass is distributed.” Therefore, more torque is
needed so the pole will reduce the angular acceleration of the tightrope walker.

Conceptual Question: Which will roll down an incline faster: a can of water or a
can of ice? Discuss and explain. (5 points)
- The can of water will roll down an incline faster than a can of ice. They may be
made of the same material which is the can, but what is inside the can matters.
Both have the same shape, however, they does not possess the same mass.
The can of water exhibits rotational moment of inertia and its angular
acceleration is greater compared to ice. Therefore, the can of water rolls faster
than can of ice.
