PART 1:
When it comes to being a great leader, one person that comes to mind as a model leader is my
supervisor, Sam. What makes Sam a great leader is his ability to identify issues, process what is causing
the issue and come up with a solution. When there is a problem, he is able to look at the big picture and
understand all the impacts associated with an issue. Looking at the big picture, he can come up with
solutions that are beneficial to everyone. Additionally, he is great mentor and takes the time to teach
From the video, I would believe Sam to emulate the following characteristics: He is grounded
and centered, creates solutions, and builds cohesion. When it comes to facing a difficult task or problem,
Sam takes his time to seek out a solution rather than reacting and possibly causing more problems. He is
methodical in his way of thinking and takes into consideration what impacts are going to come from his
decision. Also, Sam will take into consideration what others are saying and listens to everyone and their
possible solutions. If no one has a solution to the problem, he creates one. I have come to Sam with
several issues, and he is always able to come up with a solution or direct me in the right direction
without giving me the answer. Sam will also provide more than one possible solution to the problem, so
that others can provide their input and insight. His ability to solve problems, and not steer away from
center builds cohesion amongst are team. He does this by being inclusive and listening to the individuals
around him. He wants to hear the ideas of others and makes sure that everyone is included, even if he
already knows the best approach. He has a talent for challenging the people think to get them to see the
bigger picture and how something small can lead to a bid change.
Part 2:
Qualities of a great leader that I try to embody are being grounded and centered, building
cohesion/relationships, and creating solutions. The best way I go about being grounded and centered is

to not rush into a decision without first looking at what is causing the problem. Generally speaking,
individuals bring up issues and stress the importance of needing a solution without evaluating the
situation as a whole. When I am presented a problem, I look at what caused the problem by asking
questions and reviewing the details. Was the problem caused by something that was missed during the
planning phase? Did something get missed in deign? Was something missed in the spec? Who does the
fault fall on and was the issue something that could have been prevented? I want to understand the
issue so I can better asses the situation. Understand the problem allows me to come up with a possible
solution or solutions. Next, I want to emulate someone who can create solutions, much like my mentor,
Sam. I find that presenting more than one solution to a problem allows for everyone to see more than
one side of the situation and can allow for everyone to see the cause and effect. While I do admit I have
come up with several solutions in my career field, my solutions have not always been the best option
Finally, I want to embody someone that builds relationships and cohesion on the team. I
currently interact with several people daily, and I work with our client and stake holders on weekly basis.
Having the ability to build relationships allows for trust and confidence to be built. Having a good
relationship and cohesion with the people you work with allows for tough conversations and decisions
to be made more effectively. When the people around you trust you, they will trust in your ability to
make decisions. Additionally, building cohesion with your team allows for you to trust the decisions they
are making.
Inconclusion, embodying leadership that is well versed in being centered and grounded, building
relationships, and creating solutions is something I strive for every day. Whether this is at work or in my
personal life, to me, these are key leadership traits that can help guild me to success. While I do
acknowledge these leadership traits are merely a foundation of which to build on and improve upon.
