ABSTRACT
This study was aimed to comprehend the experiences that help the Muslim Senior
High School students to speak-out their perspective and opinions. The participants of this
study were the Senior High School Muslim Students in Davao City. Seven participants were
included in the study, and each of them undergoes in depth interview using a semi-structured
interview guide questions that were validated by three experts. The data was collected and
interviewees focused on the experiences and their opinions about the food services offered
The six clustered themes were formulated: Difficulty of Finding Halal servings,
Hesitation on the food served, Food dissatisfaction, Still grateful, Being Careful in Selecting
the Food, Being considerate to Muslim Clients. Through the collection and deliberations of
the results from the in-depth interview, the researchers found out that some Muslim students
are unsatisfied about the food services here, other students find it difficult to search for Halal
food, some are grateful to some restaurants who offered Halal food, other students are still
adjusting and adapting to this kind of experiences knowing that Davao City is not a Muslim
region, some Students became observant and careful in the food they are eating to avoid
eating Haram foods without noticing they want improvement so they gave recommendations
for each food restaurants and also for the fellow Muslim community.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
The choice of foods offered by most food services in Davao City are often dictated by
majority of their clients. If most of their customers are Muslims, food services offer halal foods
and non-Muslims are not contented of their meals because they are being deprived of haram
foods. Conversely, if their clients are mostly Christians food service serve haram foods. The
main conflict of this study is the lack of sensitivity and awareness for our fellow Muslim people
Food plays an important role in every religion in terms of celebrations. It can bond the
relationship of the people and on helps to keep the common identity of a person in terms of
religious affiliation. In the cultural terms, food is the most important as an individual and as a
group (Phillips, 2017). Religion is the most significant roles in following the terms of selection
in foods specially in Muslim. Muslim or Islam was found during the Mohammed time where
everyone was worshipping many gods. He pretended to be an angel and said that there
should be only one God and be called as Allah. Us the Christians, we have the holy book
which is called Bible while the Muslims has their own holy book called, Quran. They believe
the Quran was commanded by God through angel Gabriel. Muslim usually gathers every
Muslims have several rules and restrictions as their part of their beliefs and t raditions
(Geisler and Abdul, 2004). One of this is the restrictions on food selections (Saloom, 2012).
All servings must be Halal (Raj, 2014). For the Muslims, Halal food is known as allowed or
Hala or Not: Experiences …8
permissible to eat and Haram food is unlawful or prohibited to take. In Islamic law, animals
that are slaughtered are meat who experienced some practices. Corresponding to Bentley
(2017), Muslim is allowed to eat chicken as long as it is killed using the process of “dhabiha”.
Animals must be healthy and slaughtered through cuts but animals with fangs and canine
teeth or tusks are not permitted to eat. Halal doesn’t just focus on meats but it includes grains
products. They should not be prepared and partnered with alcohols which is considered as
Haram (Huffington, 2014). Haram food contains prohibited favors in terms of dress, attitude
and manner. It consists of meat from pork like bacons, pork products and animals who are
keeping away pork, alcohol and stating “bismillah” are needed to be classified as halal food.
In fact, pork is prohibited for Muslims because it is stated in Quran that it belongs to haram.
Obviously, pork is tainted, damaging, and dangerous because of the fats and germs
coming from the mud where pigs are rolling and it is also based to their laws on eating kosher
meat. They are also prohibited to take alcohol beverages such as vanilla extract.
Corresponding to Rahim (2017), In spite of small amount is added in a vanilla extract in some
food services.
conducted that food service is providing of food and drinks to the customers despite the
diversity. Food service included in a food system that are served outside our houses usually
in restaurants.
Generally, religion and food services have correlations. Religion and culture prohibit
certain foods. Religion has the biggest part in the terms of using and choosing food
As we researchers encounter some experiences from our fellow Muslim friends where
he stated that he sometimes feels uncomfortable when he sees a Haram food beside of the
halal food. In his experience, he always has the hesitations to buy that Halal food beside the
Haram food and decided not to buy it anymore. However, he never gets out of place
whenever he was surrounded by his Christian friends who are eating Haram food for them
The purpose of this research is to determine the experiences of the Muslim Senior
High students from different school in Davao City in terms of food services. This will open
the eyes of each Christians to give awareness on our fellow Muslim people on their traditions
which includes their food culture that could possibly help one another through considerations.
This study will serve as a guide or a baseline information for food service industry to improve
Review of Literature
The study will be conducted to identify the relationship between Muslims’ tradition and
food services in Davao city. As mentioned by New Britannica Encyclopedia (2013), Food is
determined as any matter that we usually consumed to supply nutritional for our body.
service for numerous belief (Siti Hasnah, 2011). Just like Cornell (2007) stated that the
conception halal (permitted) and haram (forbidden) foods guarantee common principle for
(Qur’an 16:115) indicated the four restricted classifications of meats for Muslims: the
flesh of animal which died naturally, any food made with blood of an animals, and pork.
Hala or Not: Experiences …10
Although in some point, there are also allowed foods and beneficial foods are mentioned in
Qur’an, including fruits, vegetables, herbs, grains, milk, honey, and halal meats.
Consequently, Muslims are permitted to eat meat butcher by Jews and Christians only if it
labeled as halal meats. Yet, the only time that Muslims forbid to eat halal meats is when the
In connection, Muslim and food services can’t be separated since then because it is
a component of any imperative commemoration which highlights their living. Every Muslim
has big role when it comes to food limitations to respect their culture and beliefs. Their
practices and teaching have promoted or prohibited various food (Dugan, 2006).
In United States, a number of Muslims increased to 6.2 million in 2010 where 64.5%
were in the united states. Besides, Muslim are living in Great Cincinnati region. They face
various conflicts due to their variety of traditional beliefs. There is always the same sharing
of discernment and values between Muslims groups and other strata of society. Yet, the
main difference exists in their food culture since they have their variety of laws in terms of
foods diversity that makes it their habitual lifetime. They do not eat all foods available in the
market and they prefer to do shopping from international markets which suit to their own
countries’ food culture. In line with this, the vision of this study that we will conduct will
evaluate the extent to which food choices behavior is influenced by the food store location
(Ezme, 2007).
Many Muslim students indicated that in every food business that they encounter, the
food services must widen their halal options to the fact that Muslims want all the food services
around the world to be more transparent about how their food is prepared. For instance, this
certain Muslim doubted about ordering from a restaurant because he thinks that the French
fries he ordered might deep in the same fryer where pork dumplings are boiled. Same as
Hala or Not: Experiences …11
with Amanda Hassan’s experience who is trying to observe with a wary eye to see if the
same utensil that sliced her cheese pizza also made its mark on a neighboring sausage one.
Meanwhile, the another Musllim experience moves uncomfortably more than once before
asking sandwich shop employees to change the gloves after they prepare a ham sub. Hence,
Muslims has always this belief if what food they must eat and they must be very careful about
what food they are eating. Muslim students have a lot of different strategies to follow the
halal diet that all of the Muslim must eat to practice their religion law. A lot of students stated
that they are frustrated because the eateries near in their campus lacked halal foods. Being
forbid by limited choices at universities food services are hard to interact and it also does not
Mokshin (2016) cited one of the experiences of a Muslim student. This Muslim student
stated that studying abroad appear more intimidating. But as she studied abroad her
experience answers the most common preposition of what is like being a Muslim student in
Melbourne. She also thought that there was a deficiency of halal foods in Western Societies
but she was mistaken. Halal food is not hard in some area of Melbourne. Most university
campuses in the Melbourne country requires halal foods in their dining services.
Furthermore, there are also many halal food options available in Asian groceries area where
most of the Muslim can really get halal certified food. However, Zavadski (2011) also cited
one of the experiences of Muslim. This Muslim he wrote in his article is an undergraduate
Muslim who attend in a certain university which he noticed that their school priorities haram
food. This man is a pure Muslim who only eats permitted foods corresponding to Islamic
Law. Obviously, He forces himself to eat vegetarian food during a week since the university’s
cafeterias give more dinning services for Christians. The following day of having that kind of
circumstance, he decided that rather than he was forced to eat vegetarian lifestyle in his
Hala or Not: Experiences …12
campus, He chooses to eat outside the school which can only provide him halal foods.
Nevertheless, this certain university is trying to accommodate dining services for Muslims to
the fact that Muslim students anticipate and believe that this university can furnish equality
in terms of their food services. In the next consecutive day, one of the Muslims who studied
in this particular university also indicated that the quality of food during Monday has been
For the same reason, Hodge (2017) contested that there was also a Muslim
experience in which he tried to point out on his article. He is a faithful Muslim and he had
never tried to eat swine meat in his entire life due to his religion beliefs. As his experience
started, he was eating with his family and friends in the restaurant. They ordered one beef
burger along with a side of fries. He ate about a half on it until he realizes there is something
wrong. He perceives of what he had just eaten which leads him to please the waitress to
inspect the said dish but as a response at first attempt, the said waitress had no idea. This
Muslim immediately declare that he was feeling sick until the waitress came back again and
apologize for serving the wrong dish. The spokesman of the restaurant announced that they
were sorry at all costs for causing inconvenience to the Muslim family.
Meanwhile, Ali (2016) quoted one of the experience shared by the Muslim went
in the Philippines. She was thankful to HalalTrip that she got a chance to explore and learn
more about our country. After they got in the Philippines, they had their dinner in one of the
hotels in the Philippines which also served them Halal food. It was a pleasure for her to be
able to go to Philippines where most citizens are Christian but they can find halal food easily.
Another experience mentioned by Mohzan (2012), the confirmed Muslim stated that after he
consumed time for like 3 nights in Makati, he surely announced to all Muslim that there are
only 2 actual halal restaurants in Makati / Manila City and the other are haram (and they
Hala or Not: Experiences …13
called it ‘pork free’) GILAK and New Bombay restaurant are the examples. He already met
the acknowledgeable owner of some halal food and presented their halal certificates and
many more. They serve beriani, curry, nan bread, kebab, tandoori and they are all excellent.
They also serve a good quality of rice. They have a friendly environment; the staffs are
approachable and the foods are affordable. However, Kazin (2012) mentioned one of the
experiences of Muslim that does not know that there is only one restaurant that serves halal
food in Boracay. He stated that he found this place because of the Muslim vendors who is
selling sunglasses and pearls beside the beach. This said restaurant only serves rice,
chicken, beef, fish and egg which is a simple halal food and affordable Filipino dishes. From
this standpoint, people can freely visit Boracay but finding halal food is rare.
According to the local news of ABS CBN News (2011), muslim in Jolo, Sulu scheme
to file a class suit against a company that serves food and beverage for allegedly offering
pork noodles that were mislabeled as beef. In connection with this, the Lawyer interact with
the store owner to file a case against the company which produces cup noodles product.
The store owner contested that the people who actually bought the cup noodles detect that
the original label is haram for Muslims. The owner of the store has sued the corporation for
violating Republic Act 3720 which means that certain company violates the regulation
against selling of misbranded food. The store owner had commanded the Food and Drug
Administration to discover the product’s real contents. However, the government agency
allegedly does not have the potential to do so, forcing the store owner and his complainants
to accept the product samples to test privately it in the laboratory. As an outcome, the tests
they have conducted is that the noodles’ product have its pork content on it. In line with this,
the establishment declined to give comments on the issue that have been spread out since
the case of their problem has been filed before it was presented to the court.
Hala or Not: Experiences …14
However, this one Muslim shared her experience in terms of food services in Davao
city. She disclosed that the best buffet restaurant that he ever tried is. Everyone who is living
in Davao city knows that this buffet is not a budget friendly yet a lot of people still want to try
at least for once. Variety of foods are presented which makes every person satisfied. As she
proceeds to pick some food, he had seen so many pork scattered everywhere that might
want him not to try eating their food. She suggested that since Vikings have many Muslim
customers, the certain company should put a Muslim station where all foods are halal foods.
So that, Muslims will feel comfortable while enjoying their meal. (Norhac, 2014)
Islam is not a religion. It is the way of life on how Muslim will deal with etiquette,
regulation, and manner. Since food is an essential part of our daily lives, food laws may carry
a special significance to the fact that eating the right food and following its law is considered

METHOD
Presented in this chapter are the design, setting participants, measures, and procedure
Design
The study made used of the qualitative phenomenological research design. This study
collected narrative responses about Muslim Students’ experiences on the food services in
Davao City, their experiences in eating in public restaurants, and their insights about the food
services. In order to describe and understand the experiences, the researchers considered
that the topic would be assessed productively through this research design because its main
focus is to describe the lived experiences of people. Since the purpose of this research
design is to describe, it allows the researchers to develop interpretations that will enhance
and support the descriptions in line with the phenomenon in study. Qualitative methods of
gathering first and accounts rely heavily on details that have contributed to the decisions of
the student, which makes this research design befitting to use in terms of gaining in-depth
Setting
The study was conducted within selected schools in Davao City. As of January 2018,
the researchers agreed that they will conduct an interview for a total of at least seven to ten
Participants
The participants of this study were Muslim students studying in schools in Davao City.
The inclusion criteria that the researchers have set requires that the participants must be
Muslim students of a school located in Davao City, and give their experiences in terms of
dining services if it sells halal or not. The participants will be chosen regardless of gender,
family background, religion and age provided that they met the inclusion criteria. The
researchers prepared a consent and assent forms for the participants that will also validate
by the ethics committee, Before the actual interview, an informed consent will be sought for
the participants. They were given the right to refuse or withdraw from participating in the
study if ever they felt the need to do so. They were also given the right to withhold information
that they do not wish to share and refrain from responding to questions that they do not want
to answer. The involvement of each participant will validate by an informed assent and
Measures
The researchers utilized an interview guide questions which contains open minded
questions that the participants narratively answer during in depth interview. The following
questions were categorized into different variables (background, motivation, struggles, and

other experiences). More so, the questionnaire was validated by expert English instructors
before using it in the gathering of data. An open coding was used as the researchers going
to analyses the transcripts. Analysis will also be followed in getting the answers for each
Procedure
Prior to the conduct of the actual research study, the researchers faced the proposal
defense in order to know if this study will be approved or not by the research panel and the
ethics committee. Once the proposal is approved, the researchers will identify the possible
participants of the study those that meet the inclusion criteria. The researchers prepared a
consent and assent forms for the participants that will also be validated by the Ethics
Committee. The informed consent and assent forms were sought for the participants and
their parent/guardian. They were given the right to refuse or withdraw from participating in
the study if ever they felt the need to do so. They were also given the right to withhold
information that they do not wish to share and refrain from responding to questions that they
The study used the conduct of Key informant interview, Focus Group Discussion and
actual observation. The first two methods made used of a semi-structured interview guide
questions that has been validated by three experts. The guide questions afterwards pre-
tested on one respondent who met the inclusion criteria set by the researchers. After
determining the validity and reliability of the pre-tested Interview Guide questions, the
researchers begin the data gathering process. The study utilizes the purposive sampling
strategy to gather participants who met the inclusion criteria of the study. In the conduct of

will be allowed to use their choice of dialect/language for ease of comprehension. The FGD
will last for 2-3 hours. Moreover, the key informant interview was last for approximately
fifteen to thirty minutes. Information that has been gathered will be kept confidential. The
identities of the participants remained anonymous to ensure protection and privacy. The
interview was done only once but the participants contacted for the second time for the
During the data gathering phase, the interview narratives were recorded and
documented by manual note-taking and with the use of electronic audio-recording. The
recorded narratives will form a transcript which have been transcribed and encode in
numbered pages. The transcriptions will be then form part of data that will be analyzed.
After the data collection, the researchers began analyzing the data using Colaizzi’s
seven-step method (Polit & Beck, 2010; Carpenter & Speziale, 2017). The transcripts were

among the clusters and the extract themes. The researchers ensured that the results were
accurate by seeing if the themes will in the fact associated with the responses of the
participants. After the results was ready, validation of the finding is sought from the
participants. The results were also being discussed to them in order to determine whether
the findings reflect their experiences accurately and whether or not they find them

Once the results have been finalized, the researchers proposed recommendations
and implications for the study and the stakeholders were associated with them in the
research discussion. The result of the study shall be presented in various research fora and
schools so that the study serves as a tool for policy formulation for the upliftment of the food
services among Muslim food clients and those that engage in food business.

CHAPTER III
RESULTS
Presented in this chapter are the findings of the study. Out of Sixty-Eight significant
formulated meanings were derived; subsequently sixteen clustered themes developed, and
finally four emergent themes were formulated. The seven clustered themes are: difficulty of
finding Halal servings, Hesitation on the food served, Food Dissatisfaction, Still grateful,
Slowly adapting, Being observant to food served and Very well recommended.
This theme is supported by the statements of the following participants: In the words of
Wonder Woman: “Nahihirapan ako kasi first of all parang mahirap din siyana ma-prove na
wala talaga siyang pork.” (I find it so hard since it is really difficult to prove that there is no
pork.); this was supported by Iron Man: “ahmm.. hindi okay.. frustrated.. kasi wala
masyadong food na pwede sa amin.. yung pwede naming kainin as a Muslim.” (It is not
okay. It frustrates me because there is no enough food that is applicable for us Muslims);
Supported by Blank Panther: “It is hard to find some Halal food restaurants here because
as we all know, Davao City is populated with Catholic individuals or Christians and we
Muslims aren’t so maybe there are only few halal restaurants here.”;

supported by Thor “Yes, for example dun sa boarding house naming kulang na lang
magkapakpak na ako sa manok kasi araw araw manok nalang aking ulam” (It is a yes. For
example, in our boarding house, we are always eating chicken in which I felt I am going to

by Iron Man: “Syempre naman naghehesitate ka kasi wala kang assurance na walang
something na nahalo dyan.” (of course, I am hesitating since I do not have the assurance
that the servings mixed by haram.); followed by the statement of Spider Man: “We don’t
know what’s happening inside the establishment’s kitchen because you can’t rely on their
food services here in Davao City” and “So at first, it feels like awkward, because they’ll ask
you why Muslims are not able to eat haram foods.”; this was supported by Iron man:
“Syempre nakakatakot din baka mamali ako mag eat.“ (Of course, I was scared that I eat
the wrong one.”; this was also supported by Hulk: “ mas ma calm akong mind knowing na
laing restaurant kay lain mag pataka lang ug serve.“ (I will mostly feel the calm knowing
that I am at the halal restaurant since I know there is no Pork compared to other food
services.)
Backing this theme are the statement of the following participants: In the words of Hulk:
“I feel disappointed to myself because I tasted haram food.” and “Gi loud ko at first kay
murag nabastosan pero nasanay na.” (it is disgusting at first because it is rude but I adopt

unfortunately, all the meals are mixed with pork and I’m so sad because I cannot eat it.
Because of that, I can really provoke that it is really hard to find halal restaurant.”; this was
tanan na ilang gina served kay puros naay pork” (I can tell the food serves here in school is
inadequate since all of the serving are pork.) as this also supported by Thor: “first dating ko
dito is feel ko unfair.” (My first arrival here is unfair.) and this was supported by Wonder
Woman: “Sa dating kong school. wala kasi madaming food. Uhm pero dito konti lang.” (in
my pervious school, a lot of food is not available but here also there is only few foods).
This theme is verified by the statement of the of the following participants: In the
words of Thor: “They serve well and they communicate to us.”; this was supported by Iron
man: “At least naman. hindi ko kinakain yung ano kinakain nila na bawal samin” (at least, I
did not eat what they eat.) and this was supported by Thor: “They serve well and they
communicate to us.” and “so ako happy na ako masyado kasi madaming fish.” (So, I’m
happy because there are a lot of fish.); this was supported by Spider Man: “They are

that we are going to ask questions and if you feel you are not satisfied with their answer, it
is better that you will go instead of staying there.”); this was supported by Iron Man: “hmm.
Parang naging mas careful na lang. Mag double yung pagiging maingat kasi mahirap kasi

careful because it is so difficult if we ever we eat the haram food and its consequence,
right?); this was supported by Iron Man: “I-aask ko muna talaga sila kung gi serve nila is
good for muslim. (I will ask if the serving is good for the muslim.
This theme is the suggestion of the following participants: In the words of Thor: “So ang

has allotted budget for halal foods.); this was supported by Iron Man: “Sana I mind nila
(I wish
they always mind that not all people eat pork so they should be more careful in serving
their foods.); This was strengthened by Blank Panther: “Also, I would like to add KFC

pagbigay ng foods.” (It is okay but hopefully their servings are accurate.); this was

DISCUSSION
recommendations.
Difficulty of Finding Halal servings was procured as one of the theme because some
participants said that they face difficulty upon finding halal foods in Davao City. According
to the study conducted by Elasrag (2016), the halal foods nowadays was not given much
attention when separating it to haram even if there are a lot of Muslims consumers who
preferred governed by only Halal rules on food classification. However, Halal food is still
available in every market. The reason why halal industry must one of the essential to the
world’s growth as a multi-racial society because many non-Muslims consumers still do not
know and understand the spirit syariah governing these kind of halal product. Moreover,
halal principles are not only for Muslim tradition and belief because this involve health,
cleanliness, and safety of each people nowadays. Hence, this is important to give attention
and recognition of the potential growth of halal industry because this also will help to further
develop the economy for both non-Muslim and Muslims. In line with this circumstances,
giving importance of halal foods will solve some of the long standing problems faced by our
Muslim citizen nowadays. Difficulty is evident in their situations because they allowed
several common issues and challenges as regard to halal industry in which is happening all
around the world such as forged halal certificate, fake or forged halal logo, expired halal
issued by the anonymous and not authorized person. as the Halal industry is rising
its demand. Raufu & Nuguyuddin (2014) suggested that global halal food standard should
be develop and give its importance in which supported by Kambis & Reza (2011) that there
should be one organization with its professional scope in dealing original halal certification
process for international market. Conversely, this is quite hard and impossible to
generation. (Wahab, Shahwahid, and Hamid 2016). Undeniably, practicing hahal in the
food industry is somewhat challenging since our universe is reluctant to share on how
depth details they perform halal practices in our state today. (Fun, 2007).
stated that they hesitate to buy some foods in some establishment that is not only halal
food. According to Tieman and Ghazali (2012), when the halal is expanding continuously
along supplying the Muslim citizen, the logistics of halal products are being questioned by
the food industry that we have right now. Halal Logistics and Supply chain management is
an important discipline for the halal industry since it is extending its integrity from the
source to the Muslims consumer purchase. However, the implementation of halal is still
continuously growing but it is not enough for all the Muslims since there is still conflictions
in terms of serving it. They also mention that halal should be categorized and labelled as
halal and separate it at every stage so as to prevent them from being mixed and
contaminated with the things that are not halal which is haram. According the study of
Coward and Brunk (2009), Muslim still feel the hesitation towards consuming or buying
food randomly especially those Muslim that lives in Non-Islamic cities or country. Most of

halal. Hesitation on the food served is evident in which it has its strong relevance in the
study that the researcher conduct. This theme explain further why it is one of the problem
Food dissatisfaction was also obtained as one of the theme because the result of the
Focus Group Discussion revealed that some of the Muslim student participants were not
satisfied on foods served by food services here in Davao City. As per the participants'
observations, they feel unhappy once inside the food services' vicinities knowing that most
of them served haram foods or foods served with a lot of pork which are taboo in their Muslim
culture. According to the study of Ahmed Qureshi (2017) it is noted recently that Muslim
customers become sensitive to consume products and service. Moreover, the awareness
among Muslim increased to select Halal options for their food needs from an array of food
problematic by Muslim. This study will serve as a guide by operators of the Food services
here in Davao City or them to know that a lot of Muslim student-clients are not satisfied with
Still grateful was attain as one of the theme since some of the participants said that
even if they live in the non-Muslim area, they are somehow thankful of what the said area
trying to serve for them. According to Quintano (2016), the Philippines has one of the most
diverse food option. With the help of plenty of restaurant opening side by side which make
the Muslims citizen happy for a small effort made by our city. In this progress, the industry
of halal may be increased to solve one of the problem of Muslims who lives in Non-Muslim
cities. Giving thanks for each food provided in us is a practice observed of their religion
tradition. Despite of the thought that Muslims are surrounded by Catholic people, there are

still people who is willing to serve for everyone. The Muslim community might find it difficult
sometimes to look for Halal food but there is always a place for satisfaction. Being served
well matters to each person should be too. That is the reason why it is one of the clustered
themes. As they have their own opinion, they are also grateful because even if it is not a
Being Careful in Selecting the Food was a standalone theme in which some
participants said that after of what they have experienced they make sure that the food
they bought is not haram wherein it looks in a various way in which Muslims deal with living
in non –Muslim country. Being observant and mindful to food served was a habit of
individual in which some of the participants said that they are becoming extra careful about
the food that they will eat and that is served to them. They looking for assurance every time
they eat at restaurant that there is no pork substance on the food that they will eat. This
Gentle study and observations (2008), the difficulty in finding halal foods push Muslim
students and citizen to adjust in the environment. They have learned that they must check
the food first before taking a try on it. They are adjusting because there is a lot of haram
foods scattered in different countries and even though it is hard for them, they are still
doing it, like they find another eatery where it contains a lot of halal food in the choices or
menu because they cannot tell those restaurants to remove haram foods because there is
also a Christian customer in that place. Moreover, they do asking before buying, choose
carefully or bring a food that was homemade to have an assurance. Thus, slowly adapting
implies as the result of our interview in which some participants stated that in making sure
if it is halal they smelling the food to know if it is haram or halal and to avoid haram foods.
They adapt it to keep their beliefs and faith followed and be secured and to avoid foods that

they need to avoid. According to Asad (2010), it is important for Muslims to study food
aspect labels closely as many of modern food merchandise must be considered mash-
booth or suspect until one is certain that everyone the elements inside are halal. If one will
pay attention to what is written on product labels, you may higher determine if the food
product need to be taken into consideration halal or haram. Items mentioned on a label that
ought to be considered to make the product haram are: cholesterol, as it’s far a type of fat

the food industries and ask. They have to also take a look at references and speak to
professionals about those meals product earlier than leaping to conclusions approximately
judging a meals product as halal or haram id they are no longer positive. Finally, they have
to foyer the meals industry about their nutritional worries on merchandise so that the food
groups may be privy to purchaser call for. If the Muslims take note of the form of the meals
that they placed into their bodies, they will ensure that they lead wholesome fives. Being
observant is evident in their situation because they do not want to commit mistakes that is
restricted in their culture. It will also help them to be more attentive to avoid some
unfortunate consequences. This study will also give awareness to the people about the
Being Considerate to Muslim Clients was acquired as one of the clustered theme
because the voice of our participants is a need that might help them to solve each of their
problems in terms of halal industry. Corresponding to the study of Khalek (20012), the

approach of the Muslims in halal food is crucial in controlling the Muslims’ behavior toward
consuming halal all around the world. Obviously, the role of Muslims in every family is to
educate each one of their young family members on what food they must consumed in which
should be widely implemented in our society nowadays. They have been given some
freedom to make their own right decision in terms of food choices and recommendations. In
connection to that, it is diversely known that even if the very good food products that has
been implemented is not going to be capture the consumers’ market especially Muslims
which only consumed halal servings. There is clearness happened when it comes in
implementing foods to our society. The food that they have served will be depends on the
responsive of the consumers towards its own demand. Hence, the recommendations of our
Muslim participant must surely be heard for non- Muslim food businessman to be aware on
how to separate each halal and haram servings in their menu. In the study of Zailani, Ahmad,
Wahid, Othman, and Fernando (2010), they deeply studied the recommendation needed of
the Muslim in terms of food serving in our food services is that the area where food
establishment is placed should be improved especially on serving the right food on Muslim
consumers. Each awareness must be given in the food production in different perspective in
the modernize world. Ultimately, Recommendations are visible in our theme since the voices
of Muslims need to be heard for non-Muslims to know its awareness that help each Muslims

Participant 1: “Thor”
R1: What are your thoughts about food options available in nearby establishments?
P1: Ang aking thoughts about food options available in nearby establishment kay ang first na impression
ko first dating ko dito ay feel ko unfair, bakit kasi kami we muslim hindi kami maka kain ng pork so siguro
mga 90% or 80% ng establishment dito is naga benta ng pork so yun nahihirapan kami mag adjust.
R1: Please tell me or describe to me your experiences as a Muslim student on the food services here in
Davao City?
P1: So for example, kato gung catering sa last year ata or acquaintance party kay ano na separate ang
talaga makain namin, so that’s very unfair sa aming part.
so dapat meron separate na lutuanan at sauce.
R1: What challenges/difficulties did you experiences on the food services here in Davao City?
Muslims wala silang food for Muslim so nag seminar ako ng 8:00 to 12:00 syempre gutom na gutom ako
after the seminar I found out na wala pala silang gina offer na walang baboy lahat pati lugaw nila may
pork, so ako na nag attend na seminar hindi ako naka kain so very unfair kung titingin ka sa paligid mo
lahat sila kumakain ng masasarap na pagkain tapos ikaw hindi ka makakain so hindi ako kumain even
the bread meron silang bread pero ang palaman ng break ay bacon, so ako wala talaga tubig tubig
nalang, so for me that’s very difficult na titingnan mo yung iba na pare-pareho lang naman kayong gutom
pero tapos ikaw hindi ka makain.
R1: To what/where do you attribute those challenges/difficulties?
para makakain kami of course kay wala man gud miy assurance na for example sabihin nila chicken to
R1: Are you having difficulties in finding Halal foods here in Davao City?
P1: Yes.
nasa dulo, so diba dapat fair kunyari halal diri so since halal man kunti lang naman yan siguro mga apat
Halal jan na ano na nagabenta so dapat na iuna nalang pala yan sila apat lang naman yan and the rest
doon, kay saamin baya bawal baya naming malanghap yung usok o so diba bawal namin malanghap so
Hala or Not: Experiences …61
chicken tapos as of now mahirap nadin sakin kasi allergic na ako sa chicken so wala akong choice balik
R1: What changes happened to you after those experiences?
kasi fasting month yun eh.
R1: How about eating with someone who’s consuming haram food? What did you feel about it?
P1: For example kayo so syempre classmate man ta so diba usually like sila MAO?
wala ka talagang balak kainin still its ok, diba dati lumalayo ako ngayon kahit may ulam ka na haram so
R1: Can you tell me the picture of it?
magkasama kumain at yung pang ninth ako malayo imagine mo nalang yun,
R1: What did you do that time?
isang table as long as hindi ako kakain nun and make sure ko na ang kinakain ko is hindi siya haram para
sakin.
R1: How about the food services in your school? What can you say about it?
yan siya, so ngayon first time ko makakita ng pastil na may pork well its possible naman talaga depende
R1: Did you encounter eating haram food without knowing it at first?
P1: Yes, jan sa barbecuehan sa gawas sa tapat ng Mandarin ang ginawa kasi ng ate first is naga benta
kasi sila ng chicken, so ginawa nung dalawa kasi sila naga benta jan na babae yung first lady nilagay
niya yung chicken sa right side pork left side, nung umalis yung first lady dumating yung second lady
pinag exchange niya yung pork and chicken, left side chicken right side pork, so nung bumili ako timing
bumalik si first lady akala niya walang nag exchange na chicken and pork na nilagay niya, so nung
tinanong ko yung first lady “Ate chicken to?” sabi nya “Chiken” kasi alam niya before sa umalis sa
tindahan ang nilagay nasa right side yung chicken so ako naniwala ako kasi tinanong ko siya kasi first
time ko yun.
R1: If yes, what did you do? What are your feelings about it?
masyado.
R1: What are the things you do to have the assurance before eating the food that you bought in a food
restaurant?
P1: First is we are going to ask questions if naka ask ka ng question then nag sagot sila sayo and feel mo
na your’e not satisfied with their answer kasi yun nga kasi iniisip mo “what if the oil is used” better umalis
Hala or Not: Experiences …62
R1: How about the customer service you’ve experience when you went to a food restaurant?P1: Actually
gumamit nito?” diba awkward masyado so ikaw yung freedom na gusto mo mag express gusto mo mag
reklamo o mag tanong, so best thing talaga gawin mo sa bahay kanalang kumain ikaw nalang mag
luto.R1: Can you state us more about the halal restaurant that you tried and if possible, can you try to
R1: Is there anything else you’d like to add before we end? Any recommendations?
R2: okay.. so what are the highlights on those experiences?
P2: what do you mean sa highlights?
Hehe
R2: okay okay…sigeeee.. so ano yung mga challenges/difficulties did you experiences on the food
services here in Davao City?
P2: hmmm.. yung gutom ka na masyado tapos pag punta mo.. for example yung kalenderya.. makikita
mo doon pork lahat or may something pork na naka display.
eat.. kasi for example yung oil or yung mga gamit is iisa lang pag luto.. mga ganung thought. And then
doon rin sa red corner for another example.. tinanong ko yung babae na saan yung walang pork tapos
sabi niya.. “eto sir..” binigay niya sa akin.. pag tingin ko may bacon.. (*the participant and the researcher
both laugh) hindi ko nalang kinain tapos kinain ko nalang yung fries tapos sabi ko kung may dadaan man
na homeless ibigay nalang mga ganun.
R2: wow bait naman haha sige so, as a muslim student nahihirapan ka maghanap ng mga halal foods
hehe.
R2: after those experiences anong na bago sayo?
P2: hmm. Parang naging mas careful nalang.. I ask talaga tyka mag double yung pagiging maingat kasi
mahirap kasi if nakakain kami ng haram tapos yung consequence, diba?
R2: oh okay.. so how about eating with someone na non Muslim.
P2: Oo.
R2: so what if she/he is consuming haram foods? Is it okay to you na magkasabay kayo mag kain.. mga
ganun?
Basta ikaw as a muslim.. hindi ka talaga kakain..
R2: so how about.. uhmm Did you encounter eating haram food without knowing it at first?
P2: hah!
R2: ha? As in?
Hala or Not: Experiences …64
nila.. “parang pork..” teka I ask natin.. so yun sinabi ng nasa cashier na pork daw.. yun..
R2: soo.. ano yung na feel mo?
P2: lain?
R2: what are the things you do to have the assurance before eating the food that you bought in any
different kind of food service?
muna talaga sila kung gi serve nila is good for muslim foods.. like beef and chicken.. yun..
R2: and..How about the customer service you’ve experience when you went to a any food restaurant?
I asked her for non pork
dishes since sinabi ko din na muslim ako.. and gi follow up ko na wala talagang pork since nga na mali na
ako nang kain at ayoko na maulit.. pero yun nga.. she gave me the burger bacon one..
R2: ohh.. sorry about that.. so.. Can you state us more about the halal restaurant that you tired and if
possible, can you try to compare it to any another restaurant you tried?
food.. and the food tasted better compared san a puntahan kung isang halal restaurant which is ang
Rebeccas Halal Bbq & Restaurant the food is good pero ang place are not so clean even the crew that
serve the food do not use any protection like hair nets.. so nag hope din ako na mag improve ang service
nila since may potential din to na halal restaurant..
R2: oh okay. Haha so for the last question.. may gusto ka pa ba I add or I recommend before we end?
P2: ahh.
R2: Well thank you so much for spending your time, Mr, Particpant.. big help talaga ang pag share mo ng
information sa amin.. and as a return to that we prepared you some snacks and specially we assure you
na your name is confidential..
P2: okay.. I expect you to do that. Thank you din.. *shake hands.
R3: So what are your thoughts about food options available in nearby establishment?
Lila: Uhm. Parang ano.. Konti lang ang mga halal foods ganyan. Nahihirapan ako kasi first of all parang
bisaya so di mo talaga ma prove na halal talaga yung food kasi siyempre parang halo halo man yan. Halo
halo ang lutoanan.
R3: Please tell me or describe to me your experiences as a Muslim student on the food services here in
Davao City?
R3: Ilang taon kana po dito?
Lila: Si.. Ay ngayon? Haha.
R3: Oo ngayon lang.
Lila: Ngayon? Mag isang taon na po.
R3: So, doon sa boong year ano yung mga na experience mo dito sa davao pag dating sa food services
nila?
Lila: So far okay lang man.
Lila: Uhmm.. Hahaha di ko alam. Wala naman yata.
R3: Hahaha. So far what challenges/ difficulties did you experience on food services here in Davao City?
Hala or Not: Experiences …65
ganun.
R3: So are you having difficulties in finding Halal foods here in Davao City?
Lila: Yes. Yes.
R3: What changes happened to you after those experiences?
R3: Ano yung nabago sayo after those experiences?
R3: How about eating with someone who’s consuming haram food? What did you feel about it?
Lila: Christians?
R3: Opo. So, anong ma feel mo?
Lila: Sa akin okay lang man. Hindi naman ako nandidiri batsa wag yung.. Halimbawa kung wag lang yung
mag hati ng ano ba ng ulam.
R3: So okay lang sayo kahit harapan kayo?
R3: Wala kang ginawa at that moment?
R3: So.. How about the food services in your school? What can you say about it?
R3: Yung school mo dati at ngayon ano ma feel mo sa mga services nila?
Lila: Sa dating kong school.. wala kasi madaming food. Uhm pero dito konti lang. Doon lang siguro ako
nanibago.
R3: Did you encounter eating haram food without knowing it first?
namin is tapsilog then ang pag karinig nung kwan nung tinawagan ano babsilog so ang napunta sa room
R3: Anong ginawa niyo nung nangyari yun?
Lila: Nagalit ang parents ko. Hahahaha.
R3: Ano na feel mo nun? Which is first time mo.
Lila: Shock! And di man ako nagalit, yung parents ko lng sobrang galit.
R3: Tapos ikaw ano na feel mo?
Lila: Kadiri ganun.
R3: So sige. What are the things you do to have the assurance before eating the food that you bought in
a food restaurant?
R3: So ano yung assurance mo na tama yung binigay since may experience ka na namali sila.
Lila: Same sila ng taste doon sa original na pag kain like halimbawa sa ingredients nila makita mo din
man yan no halimbawa gulay ganyan, chicken or fish.
R3: Tinatanong mo din yung staffs about sa inorder mo?
Lila: Opo tinatanong.
R3: So how about the customer service you’ve experience when you went to a food restaurant?
Lila: Okay lang they are approachable naman.
alam.
R3: Can you state us more about the halal restaurant that you tried and if possible, can you try to
compare it to other restaurant you tried?

P5: The changes happened to me after those experiences is to always ask first about what is the food.
R5: How about eating with someone who’s consuming haram food?
R5: What did you do that time?
P5: Wala lang nako sila gi tanaw naga eat and naka stop ko eat. (laugh)
R5: How about the food services in your school? What can you say about it?

sila kabalo and mag ask pa sila sa tig luto.
R5: Can you state us more about the Halal restaurant that you tried and if possible, can you try to
compare it to other restaurant you tried?
R5: Is there anything else you’d like to add before we end? Any recommendations?
P5: Ang sa school if pwede sila mag luto ug lain na ulam para dli sad balik balik among gina eat.
R5: Thank you.
Participant 6: “Captain America”
R6:What are your thoughts about food options available in nearby establishment?
P6: At first, I thought that the food options available in nearby establishments are all haram foods, and as
I discovered.
-Why did you say so?
P6: I say so because most of the vendors of fast foods are Christians that’s why we always think as a
muslims that the foods they sell are not available for us.
R6:Please tell me or describe to me your experiences as a Muslim student on the food services here in
Davao City?
P6: Ofcourse, as a muslim student, we are not / I am not comfortable on the food services here in davao
city especially when the vendors, cooker are not popular / known as a halal vendor/ maker
-What are the highlights on those experiences?
P6: I can’t highlights those experiences.
R6: What challenges/difficulties did you experiences on the food services here in Davao City?
P6: The difficulties I’ve experienced especially is, in finding halal foods to eat, or halal foods are difficult to
find.
R6:Are you having difficulties in finding Halal foods here in Davao City?
P6: Yes
-Why did you say so?
P6: as I said earlier halal foods are difficult to find.
Hala or Not: Experiences …69
R7: What are your thoughts about food options available in nearby establishment?
P: As a Muslim, I find it limited.
R7: Why did you say so?
P: Because the alternative they offer is always fish, beef and chicken.
R7: Please tell me or describe to me your experiences as a Muslim student on the food services here in
Davao City?
P: It’s hard to pick a restaurant that offers 100 percent halal foods because we don’t know whats
happening inside the establishment’s kitchen because you can’t rely on their words.
R7: What are the highlights on those experiences?
P: When I had a dinner with my siblings at genry’s grill, we asked them what’s the available food for their
muslim customers, and it’s limited because the waiter said that only chicken is their alternative dish that
they can offer.
R7: What challenges/difficulties did you experiences on the food services here in Davao City?
P: It’s hard to identify whether the food is halal or not, because of the used ingredients.
R7: Are you having difficulties in finding Halal foods here in Davao City?
P: Yes of course, because the main dish that people wants here in the Philippines is pork.
R7: What changes happened to you after those experiences?
P: I prefer cooking my own meals and buying my food at a fast food chain.
R7: How about eating with someone who’s consuming haram food? What did you feel about it?
Hala or Not: Experiences …70
P: I didn’t feel anything cause its normal. And to share a seat with a christian friend while eating, It is
expected that he/she was eating haram food.
R7: How about the food services in your school? What can you say about it?
P: The food services at my school’s canteen wasn’t that bad. They are saying what’s their available halal
food to their muslim customers. If the ingredients includes pork. So im thankful for that
R7: Did you encounter eating haram food without knowing it at first?
P: Yes I accidentally ate pork because one of my co-dancers gave me food without knowing that it’s a
porkchop. He thaught that it’s a chicken because its hard to identify. So he begged for my forgiveness
and I forgive him because accident happens.
R7: What are the things you do to have the assurance before eating the food that you bought in a food
restaurant?
P: Asking the waiter really helps. Ask them where’s the halal on their menu and what is the used
ingredients.
R7: How about the customer service you’ve experience when you went to a food restaurant?
P: It’s good
R7: -Can you please elaborate more about it?
P: Because they are considerate to their muslim customers.
R7: Can you state us more about the halal restaurant that you tired and if possible, can you try to
compare it to other restaurant you tried?
P: Al Sultan Restaurant at Abreeza Mall is an Arab and Mediterranean Restaurant, they serve tasty, halal,
delicious and healthy arab cruisine. When we ate there, it feels like we don’t need to worry because all of
their food is halal. Comparing it to some restaurants here in Davao, Some restaurants have their halal
dishes but it’s limited, and we feel like its not that safe.
R7: Is there anything else you’d like to add before we end? Any recommendations?
P: For my fellow muslims, always ask. Don’t be shy its for your safety. Masalamma!
