Susana Baca was born on May 24, 1944 in Chorrillos. Her parents were Ernesto Baca and
Carmen de la Colina. She studied to be a teacher at Enrique Guzmán University, Immediately
after he began his music studies at the Institute of Modern Art of Peru.
She studied education at the Enrique Guzmán y Valle University, where she graduated
professional title of Educator. This same institution awarded him an honorary doctorate.
Eventually he began his music studies, combining local music and poetry. He won two
scholarships, one from the Institute of Modern Art of Peru and the other from the National
Institute of Culture. Among the numerous achievements obtained by Susana Baca is the Latin
Grammy Award in 2002, for her album Lamento Negro, she was also named ambassador of
Aldeas Infantiles SOS at the national level. In November 2011, she obtained the second Latin
Grammy of her career for in the song "Latinoamérica". Susana also chaired the Inter-American
Committee on Culture, a position granted by the OAS.
Unfortunately, Chabuca passed away, but on behalf of her friend and her people, Susana
continued the task of her life: to study and recover the sound of her land. The result of that work
later became the book On Fire and Water, published in 1992, after eleven years of work. Three
years later, the couple created the "Continuous Black Institute". He currently manages an
AfroPeruvian Cultural Center in the town of Santa Bárbara.
