WHAT IS CLAUSE?

In conditional sentences, we have:

IF CLAUSE: If John is out of the office,

MAIN CLAUSE/ RESULT CLAUSE: I take his calls.

ZERO TYPE CONDITIONALS

FORMULATION:-

If + simple present , simple present


ZERO TYPE CONDITIONALS

USAGE & EXAMPLES:-

1. General Truth:
EXAMPLE : If it rains, the grass gets wet.

2. Scientific Facts:
EXAMPLE: If you heat ice, it melts.

FORMULATION:-

SECOND TYPE CONDITIONALS
USAGE AND EXAMPLES:-

It refers to an unlikely or hypothetical condition and its


probable result. These sentences are not based on the actual
situation.
Example: If I were taller, I would buy this dress.
Example: If I were the president, I would lower taxes.
Example:If a hurricane hit town, it would destroy everything.

FORMULATION:-

If+ Past Perfect, Would + Have +V3 (PP)


THIRD TYPE CONDITIONALS
USAGE AND EXAMPLES:-

The type 3 conditional refers to an impossible condition in


the past and its probable result in the past. These sentences
are truly unreal, because it is too late for the condition or its
result to exist.

EXAMPLE:-
If this thing had happened, that thing would have happened.
THIRD TYPE CONDITIONALS
EXAMPLE:-

If I had known you were coming, I would have baked a cake.
