Dear 4S Students,

Since the emergency of COVID-19, we will be adopting an at-distance teaching and learning
method so you all can continue to learn the best subject……CHEMISTRY….The instructions
for worksheet 1 are given below….Enjoy and be safe!!!

Instructions: Answer ALL questions.

4. Give three properties, other than their reactions, which are typical of aqueous acids and
bases.
(6 marks)
5. (i)Give the products that are formed when acids react with:
(a) Carbonate
(b) Alkali
(c) Reactive metal

(ii) Describe a test to identify the gas produced in 5 (i)(a) and 5(i)(c).
(12 marks)

6. Describe the pH scale, giving the range of the scale and the pH values of acidic, alkaline
and neutral solutions. (6 marks)

7. Give the colours of methyl orange and phenolphthalein for each of the following
(a) Sodium Hydroxide
(b) Hydrochloric acid. (5 marks)

8. Paul was preparing to clean Mr Alim office. He usually cleans the kettle with vinegar
and the tiles and toilet with muratic acid (Hydrochloric acid). However, the labels from
the bottle containing the two cleaning agents were removed. Paul attempted to
distinguish these two cleaning agents by smelling them. However, he was still unsure.
Plan and design and experiment Paul can undertake to determine which bottle contains the
vinegar and which contains the muratic acid. ( Muratic acid is a stronger acid than vinegar).
Include an outline procedure for the experiment, materials necessary and what evidence will
result from your procedure to distinguish the two acids. ( 15 marks)

7.Study the following equations and in each case, decide whether the substance in bold type
has been oxidized or reduced. Explain your choice in terms of either oxygen transfer or
electron transfer as appropriate.

(i) Zn(s) + CuO (s) ZnO(S) + Cu(s)
