A three storeyed symmetrical RC school building situated at Bhuj with the

following data
Plan dimensions - 7m
Storey Height - 3.5 m
Total weight of beams- 130 kN
Total weight of slab - 250 kN
Total weight of column- 50 kN
Total weight of walls - 130 kN
Weight of terrace floor- 655 kN
Live load = 1090 kN

The structure is resting on hard rock.

Determine the total base shear for 5% of damping using seismic coefficient
method?

SOLUTION

Damping Characteristics of structures. Damping is a phenomenon that makes any vibrating

body/structure to decay in amplitude of motion
SOLUTION

1. Determination of Natural Period

0.09 ℎ
Assume infill panels 𝑇 = h= 10.5 m , d =7m
√𝑑
T = 0.357 s
2. Determination of design horizontal seismic coefficient

𝑍 𝐼 𝑆
Ah =
2 𝑅𝑔
I = 1.5 from Table 6 of IS 1893-1
R= 5.0 from Table 7 of IS 1893-1
Z=0.36 from table 2 of IS 1893-1
Type of soil hard rock.

s/g =2.5 x damping factor = 2.5 x1

Ah= (0.36 x 1.5 x 2.5)/ (2 x 5)
Ah = 0.135

3 Determination of seismic weight

Weight of one storey = Total weight of slabs + beams+ columns+ walls + LL
= 130+250+50+530+130 kN

= 1090 kN

Total dead load = 1090x2 kN

Weight of terrace floor = 655 kN

Total weight of Building W = ( 2 x 1090) + 655

W = 2835 kN

4 Determination of base shear

VB = A h W
= 0.135 x 2835
VB = 382.725 kN

Distribution of equivalent lateral load

Q1= 16.71 kN
Q2 = 112.56 kN
Q3 = 253.21 kN
