Phonetics

When you know a language, you know the sounds of that language

-Everyone who knows a language knows how to segment sentences into words, and words
into sounds.
-We know which aspects of pronunciation are linguistically important and which are
not
-In general, languages differ in terms of the inventory of speech sounds that words
are built on

Types
1. acoustic phonetics
-focused on the physical properties of sound
2.auditory phonetics
-focuses on how listeners perceive sounds
3.Articulatory phonetics
-focuses on how the vocal tract produces the sounds of language

Orthography (alphabetic spelling)


-a way of writing in a language
-does not reprent the sounds of a language in a way
