ABSTRACTION EXAMPLES

If you mentioned “abstract art” to a passerby, they’d most likely think you’re referring to

‘‘
a modern art painting, full of gestural lines and shapes. And they’d be right to an extent.
Abstraction can also refer to art or design that has been reduced or simplified: “abstracted.”

Strictly speaking, the word abstract means to separate or withdraw something

from something else. The term can be applied to art that is based on an object,
figure or landscape, where forms have been simplified or schematised.
- Tate Britain

We see abstraction all over the motion graphics and commercial illustration industries; a lot
of designers play with abstraction in unique and interesting ways everyday. Below, I’ve listed
a number of talented designers who definitely are worth a gander. Hopefully they inspire you
to push your abstraction techniques to the next level!

Giacomo Bagnara
Browsing Giacomo’s website feels like I’m walking through an art gallery. Besides being great
at using simple geometric shapes to create intriguing designs, all of his work sits together so
succinctly and harmoniously. It’s very iconic.

Eusong Lee
You may recognize Eusong’s work from “My Moon,” a short film that made some waves
in festivals. He also works for Chromosphere, one of my favorite studios! He’s fantastic
at extracting geometric shapes from the real world and integrating them seamlessly into
stylized characters and landscapes.

Khylin Woodrow
Khylin was a coworker of mine while I was Oddfellows, and while there, I was always
just stunned at how well she used simple shapes to create really intriguing silhouettes.
She created a ton of the characters in the piece we worked on for The Blend Is Near.
She’s also a supremely talented animator!

Sebastian Curi
An alumni of both Buck & Giant Ant, Sebastian’s work is proof that abstraction for motion
design doesn’t need to feel geometric. His organic, friendly shapes are instantly recognizable.

Colin Bigelow
First of all, Colin Bigelow is, in my opinion, one of the most diverse and talented artists in this
industry! He’s got a huge range of stuff on his website - from realistic painterly landscapes to
flat graphic landscapes.

But I’d really love for you to take a look at his ongoing graphic art project titled
The Playmetric. You’ll discover plays with all types of reduced & simplified abstraction
in such interesting ways.
