Solving Problems Involving
Lesson Percent
1
What I need to Know

In this lesson you are expected to solve percent problems such as percent of
increase/decrease, (discounts, original price, rate of discount, sale price, marked-up price),
commission, sales tax, and simple interest.

What’s New
Due to covid-19 pandemic crisis, some of the companies was closed and many people
losses their job not only Filipinos but also people from all over the world. Many of us were
affected morally, socially, emotionally, spiritually and most of all financially. Because there are
individuals grab the opportunity of selling products much higher than the original price.
Perfect example is, the price of a 1 kilo kalamansi before is ₱30.00 only but the seller
increases it to ₱60. 00. Can you tell how much percent of increase did the seller get from
selling kalamansi?
We can easily solve this problem by studying further the lesson. But before that let us
familiarize important terms found in this lesson.

Some important mathematical terms to know.

Percent of change indicates how much a quantity increases or decreases with respect
to the original amount. Whenever there is a change (increase or decrease), it can be
expressed as a percent of increase or of decrease.
Percent of increase is called if the new amount or value is greater than the original
amount or value.
Percent of decrease is called if the new amount or value is less than the original
amount or value.

1
Discount is the amount deducted from the original price.
Markup is an increase in the price of an item.
Commission is an amount of money added to the principal amount borrowed or
invested after a period of time.
Sales Tax commonly known as Value Added Tax (VAT), is a certain percent added to
the amount of purchases.

Below are formulas on how to solve such related problems.

Formulas in finding percent of increase/decrease :
𝐴𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐼𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒
 Percent of Increase =
𝑂𝑟𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐴𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡
𝐴𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐷𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒
 Percent of Increase =
𝑂𝑟𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐴𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡

 Amount of Increase = Percent of Increase x Original amount

 Amount of Decrease = Percent of Decrease x Original amount
 New Amount = Original Amount x (100% + Percent of Increase) or Original Amount
x (100% - Percent of Decrease)

Formulas in finding discount problems:

 D = OP x DR
𝐷
 OP =
𝐷𝑅
𝐷
 DR = x 100%
𝑂𝑃

 SP = OP – D
= OP x (100% - DR)
D - Discount, OP- Original Price, DR- Discount Rate, SP - Sale Price

Formulas in solving markup problems:

 M = C x MR
𝑀
 C=
𝑀𝑅
𝑀
 MR = x 100%
𝐶

 SP = C + M
= C x (100% + MR)
M – Markup, C – Cost, MR – Markup Rate, SP – Selling Price

2
Formulas in solving commission problems:
 C = TS x CR
𝐶
 TS =
𝐶𝑅

= TS x (100% - CR)
𝐶
 CR = x 100%
𝑇𝑆

 SP = TS – C
C – Commission, TS – Total Sales, CR – Commission Rate, SP – Sale Proceeds

Formula in solving sales tax problems:

 Sales Tax = Total Amount of products x Rate of Sales Tax

Formulas in solving interest problems:

 I=PxRxT
𝐼
 P=
𝑅𝑥𝑇
𝐼
 T=
𝑃𝑥𝑅
𝐼
 R= x 100%
𝑃𝑥𝑇

 AD = P + I
= P x (1 + R x T)
I – Interest, P – Principal, T – Time, R- Rate of Interest, AD – Amount Due

What is It

Now let’s go back to our problem mention above.

I
The price of a 1 kilo kalamansi before is ₱ 30.00 but the seller increases it to ₱ 60.00.
Can you tell how much percent of increase did the seller get from selling kalamansi?

In solving a problem always remember four important terms. Understand, Plan, Solve,
and Check.

Let us find the percent of increase.

Using the formula, we have:

3
𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆
Percent of Increase =
𝑶𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕
60−30
= Compute for the increase
30
30
= 30
= 1 x 100%
= 100%
The percent of increase is 100%

Below are some examples in solving percent of change such as (percent of

increase/decrease), discounts, original price, rate of discount, sale price, marked-up price,
commission, sales tax, and simple interest.

Finding Percent of Increase

To find the percent of increase, consider the following examples.

Example 1 Find the percent of increase from 8 to 14.

Solution:
𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆
Percent of Increase =
𝑶𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕

14 − 8
= Amount of increase: 14 – 8 = 6
8
6 3
= = Simplify.
8 4

𝑛 3
= Write the fraction as a percent.
100 4

4n = 300 Find the product of the extreme and the means.

4𝑛 300
= Divide both sides by 4.
4 4

n = 75
Answer: The percent of increase is 75%

Example 2 The number of members of Math Club Society listed on the table below.
School Year Number of Members
2011-2012 243
20212-2013 652

What is the percent of increase in membership of Math Society Club?

4
Solution:
𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆
𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 = 𝑶𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕

652 − 234
= Amount of increase: 652 – 243 = 409
243

409
= 243 Divide.

≈ 1.683 Round to the nearest thousandths.

≈ 1.683 x 100 = 168.3% Write the decimal as percent.
Answer: The number of members of Math Club Society had increased by about
168.3%

Finding Percent of Decrease

When a particular amount is getting lower from its original value, we describe the change(s)
as a decrease, and we present this using percent.
Example 3 Find the percent of decrease from ₱ 1,278.00 to ₱ 1,150.20.
𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆
𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 = 𝑶𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕
₱ 1278 − ₱ 1150.20
= Subtract:
₱ 1278
Amount of decrease: ₱ 1278.00 – ₱ 1150.20
= ₱ 127.80
₱ 127.80
= Divide.
₱ 1278

= 0.1 x 100 Write decimal as percent.

= 10%
Answer: The percent of decrease is 10%.

Example 4 The price of an LPG tank has decreased by 5% from its original price of ₱
710.00. By how much has the amount decreased? What is the new price of the LPG tank?
Understand.
a. What is asked?
An LPG tank’s amount of decrease from its original price and its new price.
b. What are the given facts?
Original price is ₱ 710.00, the LPG’s new price has decreased by 5%.
Plan.
We can use the following formulas to solve the problem.
To get the amount of decrease:
Amount of Decrease = Percent of Decrease x Original Amount
To get the new price:

5
New Price = Original Amount x (100% - Percent of Decrease)
Solve.
Finding the amount of decrease, we have:
Amount of Decrease = Percent of Decrease x Original Amount
= 5% x 710
= 0.05 x 710
= ₱ 35.50
Answer: the amount has decreased by ₱ 35.50.
New Price = Original Amount x (100% - Percent of Decrease)
= 710 x (100% - 5%)
= 710 x 95%
= 710 x 0.95
= ₱ 674.50
Answer: The new price of the LPG tank is ₱ 674.50

Finding Discount and Sale Price
Example 1 Lyka waited until after summer to buy a dress. She found one amounting to ₱
2,500.00 and was selling at a discount of 40%. How much did she save by waiting? How much
did she pay for the dress?
Solution:
DR = 40%, OP = ₱ 2,500.00, D = ?
Using the discount formula, we have:
D = ₱ 2,500x40%
= ₱ 2,500x0.40
D = ₱ 1,000.00
Computing for the sale price:
SP = OP − D
=₱ 2,500 − ₱ 1,000
SP = ₱ 1,500.00
Answer: Lyka saved ₱ 1,000.00 and paid ₱ 1,500.00 for the dress.

Example 2 A wristwatch was sold for ₱ 2,100.00 with a 16% discount. What was the
original price of the wristwatch?
Solution:
SP = ₱ 2,100.00, DR = 16%, OP = ?
Using the formula for the sale price, we have:
SP= OP x (100% −DR)
2100 = OP x (100% − 16%) Substitute the given.
2100 = OP x 84%
2100 = OP x 0.84 Change 84% t decimal.
2100 𝑂𝑃 𝑋 0.84
= Divide both sides by 0.84
0.84 0.84
₱ 2,500.00 = OP

Answer: The original price of the wristwatch is ₱ 2,500.00.
