Performs Addition of Integers
Content Input
In the previous lesson, pupils learned about what integers are, how to
represent integers in a given situation and how to arrange them in ascending and
descending orders. In this lesson pupils will learn on how to add integers. Adding
integers is different from adding whole numbers. Signs of numbers are important factor
in adding integers. There are also rules that we need to follow in adding integers.
It is important to know how to perform basic operations on integers
because we are using integers in our daily life. For example, when we get the
temperatures in our body, when we walk forward and backward and when we gain or
lose weight involve integers.

On the right side of 0, we can see the positive integers while on the left side of
0, you can see the negative integers. On the center of the number line, you can find
zero. It is neither negative nor positive.

These are the rules to follow in adding integers.
Rule No. 1: In adding integers having the same signs, simply add the numbers
and copy the common sign to the sum.
Illustrative Examples
1. (+13) + (+34) =
Solution:
+1 3
+ +3 4
+4 7 The sum is +47 or 47 since the common sign is positive (+).
2. (-411) + (-234) =

Rule No. 2: In adding integers having different signs, disregard first the signs
and subtract the numbers. Then, copy the sign of the greater number to the
final answer. (Note: Disregard also the sign in identifying the greater number.)
Illustrative Example
1. (-56) + (+24) =
Solution:
(-5 6)
+ (+2 4)
-3 2 The final answer is -32. The sign is negative (-) since
the sign of the greater number which is 56 is negative

Lesson Subtraction of Integers

Below is a number line showing the negative and positive integers. The numbers to
the right of zero are positive. The numbers to the left of zero are negative integers.
-8 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 +1 +2 +3 +4 +5 +6 +7 +8
-8 and +8 are opposites since both numbers are 8 units away from zero.
-2 and +2 are opposites since both numbers are 2 units away from zero.
The opposite of +6 is -6 and the opposite of -1 is +1. The pair of opposite numbers are
called Additive inverse.

This is the rule to follow when we subtract integers.
Illustrative examples
1. (+76) – (+24) =
+76 is the minuend and +24 is the subtrahend. First, get the additive inverse of +24
which is -24. Then proceed to addition.
The equation will become (+76) + (-24) = n. Since the numbers have different signs,
we need to follow rule no. 2 in adding integers.

+5 2 The final answer is +52 or 52. The sign is positive (+) since the sign
of the greater number which is 76 is positive (+).
2. (-977) – (+322) =
First, get the opposite of +322 which is -322. Then add -322 to -977. Since the
numbers have the same signs, we need to follow rule no. 1 in adding integers.

-1 2 9 9 The final answer is -1299 since the common sign is positive (-).

Performs Multiplication of Integers
Rule No. 1: When you multiply two integers having the same signs
( two positive integers or two negative integers) the product is
always a positive integer.

Performs Division of Integers
In this lesson pupils will learn on how to divide integers. The process is
similar in dividing natural numbers. The only difference is that you are dividing
numbers with positive and negative signs.
Rule No. 1: When you divide two integers having the same signs
(two positive integers or two negative integers) the quotient is
always a positive integer.
Illustrative Examples:
1. (+124) ÷ (+4) =
+3 4
+4 (+1 2 4)
-12 . The quotient is +34. The sign is positive (+) since the dividend
