complete each sentence. (5 POINTS)

What’s up?
Tyrone: What’s up, Sean? Do you feel OK? You look sick.
Sean: Uh... I know. I feel really bad.
Tyrone: What do you have?
Sean: I’m not sure exactly. My head hurts and my throat is sore.
Tyrone: Well, my friend. It sounds like you have a cold.
Sean: Yeah... maybe, but I have an earache too!
Tyrone: An earache?
Sean: Yeah... and it hurts a lot!
Tyrone: That’s strange. Maybe you should take some aspirin. Do you have a fever?
Sean: I don’t think I have a fever and I hate aspirin. They taste so bad.
Tyrone: Well, my advice is that you shouldn’t wait. You really should go to see a doctor.

What’s wrong?
Mother: What’s wrong, Jason? Are you feeling well? You look sick.
Jason: No, Mom. I’m fine. I’m just tired.
Mother: Yes, that’s right. You are practicing a lot for the next basketball game.
Jason: Yeah. Four hours every day this week. Now I have a backache, my knees hurt,
and my stomach aches too.
Mother: You have a stomachache?
Jason: Yes, I do.
Mother: Hmm... but you don’t have a fever?
Jason: No. Should I see a doctor?
Mother: I think you should go to bed. Maybe you are just feeling tired from exercise.
That’s why you have aches and pains in your knees and back.
Jason: And my stomach?
Mother: I think you eat a lot of candy and you shouldn’t. Actually I should take you to
see a dentist.

What’s the matter?

Dr. Simmons: What are your symptoms, Mrs. Lenti?
Mrs. Lenti: Well, doctor. I have a terrible headache. My body aches everywhere. Even
my legs, arms, and my feet hurt. I feel very hot too.
Dr. Simmons: Do you have a sore throat too?
Mrs. Lenti: Yes doctor, I do!
Dr. Simmons: Well Mrs. Lenti, it looks like you have the flu.

Mrs. Lenti: The flu? Oh no... I don’t want to be sick! I’m so busy. My birthday is
tomorrow!
Dr. Simmons: I’m sorry, but I think you should go home and go to bed. You should
drink a lot of juice and water. But the most important is to lie down.
Mrs. Lenti: Should I take some medicine, like aspirin? Maybe a flu shot can help?
Dr. Simmons: No. I don’t think so. Aspirin helps a fever, but not the flu. And you
should get a flu shot when you are healthy.
Mrs. Lenti: Oh no!
Dr. Simmons: Just rest. You can have a birthday party when you are better.

Xiaoqing is a young ice skater from China. In her city, they call her Little Blue
because she always wears a blue-gold bracelet and a bright blue costume for good luck
during competitions. Xiaoqing isn’t very tall; in fact she’s quite short. Sometimes people
even call her Little Blue Bird because of her small size.
Xiaoquing wishes to become an ice skating champion in her country, so she works
very hard at it. She trains six hours a day, six days a week. When she has a competition,
she trains even more: eight hours a day, seven days a week. Her coach believes that she
is very good and has a chance to represent China in the Winter Olympics. They are
making plans for this. There are many good skaters in China, so if Xiaoquing would like
to be the next champion, she has to be better than the others. Ice skating is very difficult
and Xiaoquing uses her whole body in the sport. There are many turns and jumps, so
she has to be very strong. Xiaoquing has a very healthy diet. She never eats candy or
desserts.
Today is a great day for Xiaoquing! She is celebrating a win. What is she going to
do on this special day? She is going to have a (healthy) meal with her family and friends
in a nice Thai restaurant. Then they are going to dance all night. Because Xiaoquing
trains so much, she doesn’t always have a lot of free time to spend with them.
Does Xiaoquing have other plans for her future? Sure! She says that she would
like to study acting in Beijing and get married one day. Her biggest goal, she says, is to
have a lot of children and to be happy, of course--after she wins at the Olympics!

XIV. Instructions: Read the article. Then choose True or False. (5

I am waiting here at the airport in New York for two families coming from East
Africa. They arrive in about an hour, so I have to wait because they don’t speak English,
and they don’t know what to do when they get here. I think my job is very important
and I like it a lot. I work for an organization that helps people who are migrating to the
United States for economic reasons or sometimes because of wars in their home
countries. These families had a hard time before we helped them. They migrated from
town to town, and sold their homes and everything else to run away from a big war
there. Maybe here they can have a better life, or at least they can be safe.

I am an immigrant too. I was born in Syria, but later my family moved to

England. We stayed there for two years, but my father didn’t find a job. Later, we moved
to the United States. I remember it was difficult for my parents because of the language.
I was a little boy, so I learned English very fast, but my parents didn’t. We came here in
1989, many years ago. First we stayed on the East Coast in Philadelphia for six months,
and then we moved to San Francisco on the West Coast. Moving so many times isn’t fun.

This is why I understand how much these families need my help. They are going
to live here in New York. I found two apartments, opened bank accounts for them, and
found schools for their children. On October 16th, two weeks from now, both fathers can
start work at a local supermarket. They don’t have to know how to speak English there,
but they start English classes in November.

I know that the families are tired, happy, and sad. They had a lot to do before
they came and the trip was very long... hours and hours on buses and planes. The
families got their passports, bought tickets, packed, and said goodbye to their country, of
course. Their decision was hard, but good for their future. You know, they are not alone.
There are many famous immigrants to the United States: Salma Hayek, Albert
Einstein, Jerry Yang, and Albert Pujols. They all had to learn the language, probably
live with someone they knew, and do many other things to have a better life.
