Role play scenario cards
EMERGENCY SCENARIO

Scenario 1
CONSIDER: Casualty has a head injury, is unresponsive, and area is not safe. You cannot check
casualty properly until it is safe to approach.
HAZARDS: Sparks, electricity, cans and chemicals are present.

ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:

➤ Call 999/112 for an ambulance


➤ Shout for help
➤ Electricity supply should be turned off if possible (adult)
➤ Once the area is secured get help to administer first aid
➤ Ensure ambulance knows where to go on arrival (someone waiting for them?)
➤ Ask for the fire service to attend, in event of any flammable spillage or fires.


Scenario 2
CONSIDER: Possible injury to skin, bone, muscle or joint. Casualty is alert and responsive but
in pain and it is going to be difficult to move him from scene. He is also cold.
HAZARDS: Bike is a trip hazard
ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:

➤ Removing bike from area to make safe


➤ First aid to wound
➤ Reassure casualty
➤ Keep casualty warm
➤ Call for help to assist
➤ Call 999/112 for ambulance




Scenario 3

CONSIDER: Do not climb up yourself as you may become injured, casualty if safe can remain in
position until help arrives

HAZARDS: Height (fall), debris on roof.

ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:

➤ Call 999/112 for fire service to rescue casualty


➤ Reassure casualty
➤ Ensure they do not move and wait safely away from edge of roof


Scenario 4
CONSIDER: Gas needs to be turned off, but supplier or fire service may need to do this, area
should be kept clear and everyone at a safe distance.

HAZARDS: Sparks, electricity, gas

ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:


➤ Remove people to a safe distance from the house
➤ Call 999/112 call asking for fire service
➤ Call gas board
➤ Ensure other neighbours are aware


Scenario 5
CONSIDER: Unsure if casualty is in building, unsure of flammable materials present
HAZARDS - Sparks, electricity, cans and flammable chemicals possibly present, trip hazards on
site

ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:


➤ Call 999/112 asking for fire service
➤ Consider ambulance in case casualty inside
➤ Do NOT tackle fire
➤ Shout for help
➤ Wait and direct emergency services


Scenario 6
CONSIDER: 2 casualties, sea is hazardous, giving location possibly difficult when at sea
HAZARDS: water (drowning and cold)
ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:

➤ Calling 999/112 asking for coastguard


➤ Alerting passers-by if any
➤ Ensure call is made with good directions to incident
➤ Keep watching kayak so you can retain location information



Scenario 7
CONSIDER: Unresponsive casualty and you do not know cause
HAZARDS: What has made casualty unresponsive? (injury/ assault/ gas/poisons etc.)
ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:

➤ Checking for dangers


➤ Primary survey
➤ Shout for help
➤ Call 999/112 for an ambulance
➤ Recovery position (if unresponsive and breathing normally)
➤ CPR (if unresponsive and NOT breathing normally)
➤ Keep casualty warm


Scenario 8
CONSIDER: It is likely that a chest pain could be a heart attack
HAZARDS: Trip hazards? (minimal hazards present)
ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:

➤ Reassure casualty
➤ Consider possible heart attack/chest pain
➤ Ask about medical history or previous incidents that were similar
➤ Ask if he has any medication that he should take for chest pain
➤ Sit casualty down on floor
➤ Ensure casualty rests and keep him as calm as possible
➤ Call 999/112 for ambulance


Scenario 9
CONSIDER: Possible allergic reaction
HAZARDS: Allergens
ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:

➤ Remove allergen from scene


➤ Reassure casualty
➤ Call 999/112 and ask for ambulance
➤ Position casualty on the floor sitting down
➤ Ask if they have any medication for allergic reaction with them
➤ Help them administer medication
➤ Ensure ambulance knows correct location


Scenario 10
CONSIDER: Asthma attack, any breathing emergency can be life threatening
HAZARDS: Other skaters
ACTIONS COULD INCLUDE:

➤ Sit casualty down


➤ Reassure the casualty
➤ Ask if she can take any more of inhaler
➤ Call 999/112 for and ambulance
