NUMERICAL APERTURE OF OPTICAL FIBER

AIM:
To measure the numerical aperture of the plastic
fiber.
EQUIPMENTS:

FCL 0
Imeter fiber cable
NA JIG
Power suppy

THEORY:
Numencal aperture refers to the max imum angle at which the light incident on the
fber end is totally intemally reflected and is transmitted properly along the Fiber The
cone formed by the rotation of this angle along the axis of the fiber is the cone acceptance
ofthe fiber. The light ray should strike the fiber end within its cone of acceptance: elsei
will be refracted out of the fiber core.

PROCEDURE
L Connection is made as per block diagram.
2. Insert a Fiber into a cap of LED SFH756V.
3. Insert the other end of the fiber into the numerical aperture measurement Jig. Hold
the white wire sheet iacing the fiber. Adjust the fiber such that its cut face is
perpendicular to the axis of the Fiber

4. Keep the distance of about 1Omm between the fiber tip and the screen. Gently
tighten the screw and thus fix the fiber in the place.

6. Measure the distance d and also vertiecal and horizontal diameter MR and PN.
7.
Mean radius is calculated using -(MR +PN) /4
8. Find the numerical aperture of the fiber us ing the formula

NAsin 1/(B + )

Where m is the maximum angle at which the light incident is properly

transmitted through the fiber.
