AP-101: PHYSICS-I
1. (a) Explain the objective of Michelson-Morley cxperiment and also derive the
expression for fringe shift. Discuss the outcome of the results of this experiment.
(4)
(b) Calculate the % contraction in length and the orientation of a rod of length 2 metres
in a frame of reference which is moving with 0.6c velocity in a direction making an
angle of 30° with the rod. (2)
2. (a) Show that if the variation of mass with velocity isconsidered, the kinetic energy of
a particle of rest mass mo and moving with a velocity v is given by:
K=m,c
Deduce the expression for the limiting value of relativistic kinetic energy and also show
it graphically. (4)
(b) Calculate the amount of work to be done to increase the speed
of an electron from 0.6c to 0.8c. Given that rest energy of
clectron- 0.SMeV. (2)

3. (a) Discuss the formation of newton's ring in reflected monochromatic light
the expression for the diameters of bright and dark rings. How they are different from
the circular rings formed in the Michelson Interferometer. (4)

5. (a) Explain the two general methods for
obtaining the coherent sources. A beam of lioh+
consisting of two wavelengths, 6500 A and 5200 A, is used to
obtain
fringes in a Young's double slit experiment. (1) Find the distance of interference nce
