He was a Peruvian military sailor and politician, and

posthumous great admiral of the Peruvian Navy. Born
in Piura on July 27, 1834 and died in Punta
Angamos, Mejillones on October 8, 1879.

Miguel Grau being in command of the Huascar

managed to prevent the landing of Chilean troops in
the Peruvian territory. And so he won the naval
combat of Iquique sinking the corvette Esmeralda,
and showed generosity saving the castaways of the
enemy ship.
