Identifying the Various Types of Speech Context

Background Information:

Communication is part of our everyday life. You might have tried speaking to yourself when
you make a decision, or when you analyze things on your own. You might have expressed your
opinions and ideas by interacting with friends, family, colleagues, and with group of many people.
Communicative competence is the ability to use the language appropriately and to
communicate successfully. Effective communication requires understanding of the speech context
because our way of talking to people depends on who we are having a conversation with and the
situation we are in. By knowing these, we can adjust our speech style depending on the context of
the situation. The use of speech context varies depending on the purpose of the speech and the
relationship of the communicators and the context (Luijim and Larioque, 2016).

TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXT

Speech context is the way that people use to interact and convey message. According to Balgos
and Silpacio (2016), there are two types of Speech Context. These are (1) Intrapersonal and (2)
Interpersonal. Interpersonal communication has four types, and these are (1) Dyad Communication,
(2) Small Group, (3) Public, and (4) Mass Communication.

1. Intrapersonal Communication
This occurs when the person acts as the sender and the receiver of the message. The
speaker talks to himself/herself when thinking or analyzing things, and in making a decision.

Example:
Louise can’t decide what track and strand she will take in Senior High School.
She has been thinking about it for weeks.

2. Interpersonal
Unlike the intrapersonal communication which only involves one person in the
communication process, intrapersonal involves two or more people. This type of speech
context gives people the chance to have a connection with one another in order to build a
harmonious relationship.

Types of Interpersonal Context

a. Dyad Communication – This happens when two people communicate with each other.

Example:
Leo is concerned about his girlfriend who is having a problem with her family.
She is feeling down so he wants to comfort her in this trying time.

b. Small Group – This type of communication includes at least three but not more than
twelve people through face-to-face interaction. In this style, members of the group can
share their ideas, thoughts and opinions about a certain topic to achieve a certain goal.
Examples are attending a conference, group discussion or other meetings.

2
Example:
After eating dinner, you decided to have a meeting with your siblings on how to
equally divide the household chores.

c. Public – This means that you need to deliver or send a message in front of a large
audience. The purpose of the speaker in this type of communication is to give
information, to motivate, or to persuade the listeners.

Example:
President Rodrigo Duterte is delivering a speech in front of a large
crowd.

d. Mass Communication – This communication occurs through television, radio,

newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, internet, and other types of media.

Example:
I am attending an online class. Our school adopted the new normal of
teaching because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
