Let Us Discover

Speech context refers to the surroundings, environment, background or setting that

determine, specify, or clarify the meaning of an event. Context refers to the setting in which
the communication takes place. It helps to establish meaning and can influence what is said
and how it is said.
In order for you to have a clear understanding on what speech context is, read the
pieces of information that follow:

Types of Speech Context

1. Intrapersonal- is a communication in which you are conversing with your inner self
by thinking. (Agbayani and Meru,2016, p. 55) This communication is centered on one
person, where the speaker performs the roles of both the sender and the receiver of
the message. The message is made up of thoughts and feelings while the medium is
the brain that processes what you think and feel. This may include self-talk, acts of
imagination and visualization, and even recall and memory (McLean, 2005).

2. Interpersonal- refers to communication between and among people and establishes

personal relationship between and among them. According to Solomon and Theiss
(2013), the inter part of the word interpersonal highlights how this communication
connects people. When you engage in this type of communication, you and another
person become linked together. Further, the personal part means that your unique
qualities as a person matter when this communication takes place.

3. Public –is a speaker-audience communication that involves delivering a message to

a large audience. The goal of the speaker is to inform or to persuade. This happens,
for instance, when you deliver a graduation speech to your batch.

4. Mass Communication- is a communication that uses mass media such as
