1
Lesson
Types of Speech
1 According to Purpose

Combining all that was learned in the previous lessons, you are now
ready to communicate a message in the context of speaking in public.

As a member of a family or community and even as a student, you will,

at one time or another, be called upon to deliver speeches. And as the speaker,
depending on the purpose you want to achieve, you can make someone think,
change one’s mind, smile or even laugh.

Speeches are more formal than talking in usual conversations. They are
primarily delivered to leave a remarkable message. The purpose of the
message is just as important as how you want to be perceived as a speaker.
This lesson would assist you in defining yourself as a public speaker and your
purpose in delivering your speech.

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you were able to distinguish and employ various
communicative strategies that may enhance your communicative competence
in oral discourse. Communicative strategies are the blueprints or means of
sharing information adopted to reach our purpose in communicating.

There are seven (7) communicative strategies that you have learned and
applied in the previous module. Find them in the grid by writing your answers
on a separate sheet of paper. The words may be hidden in any direction. Use
the descriptions below as your guide and reference.

2
1. It refers to limiting someone or something.
2. It means establishing a topic with people you are talking to.
3. It is giving all communicators an opportunity to speak.
4. This is a rule to lead people’s behavior.
5. It pertains to bringing an end to a conversation.
6. It is addressing problems or issues.
7. This means changing from one topic to another.

3
What’s New

Look at the text box below. Discuss the purpose of the message below:

“Speeches are more formal than

talking in usual conversations.
They are primarily delivered to
leave a remarkable message.”

What is It

Purpose is one of the considerations in preparing and delivering a

speech. It decides what information should be included in the speech or not.
There are three general types of speeches based on one’s purpose:
exploratory or informative, persuasive and entertainment speech.
Exploratory/Informative Speech

This type of speech provides information in an in-depth manner

which can help the audience understand concepts or ideas which are
new to them, not readily available to everyone or already known but not
yet clearly understood (Flores, 2016). It is a means of delivery of
knowledge and not aimed to sway the audience to the speaker’s point
of view.
1. Persuasive Speech
A persuasive speech is written to persuade, or convince the
listeners, of the validity of the speaker’s argument. This might involve
persuading someone to change his or her opinion or at the very least
take into account some elements that may have not really been
considered before. The audience may find the argument acceptable or
unacceptable.

4
2. Entertainment Speech
According to Wrench (2012), an entertaining speech is a speech
designed to captivate an audience’s attention and regale or amuse them
while delivering a message. It intends to captivate the audience’s
attention and add comedic flair or drama while delivering a message.
The purpose is to share laughter and stir the audience’s emotions. Take
note that its sole purpose is not only to humor but also to dramatize.

What’s More

Get to know more how to determine the purpose of speeches in the

following activity. Below are descriptions and specific topics of speeches,
identify whether it is to inform, to persuade or to entertain. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.
