THE 1815 BELL OF STA. MONICA PARISH This bell was found at the churchyard of
AGOO, LA UNION Bugallon, Pangasinan in the year 1963. Atty.
Rolando Rivera, a native of Agoo, was on a
certain occasion in the church of Bugallon where
his attention was caught by a big dilapidated bell
with the inscription: “Sta. Monica… Agooo…
1815.” He interviewed one of the parishioners
who was the churchyard and he said that the
bell belonged to Agoo which was mistakenly
delivered to Bugallon Church from Spain in the
early 19th Century.
Archbishop Mariano A. Madriaga, a native son of
Agoo was then the Archbishop of Lingyaen-
Dagupan, Pangasinan; hence, the retrieval was
easily facilitated. Atty. Rivera who was at that
time a Municipal Councilor, made the decisive
move to transport the bell to Agoo in a weapon
carrier, with the support of Agoo’s incumbent
mayor, Mayor Agustin Chan and Congressman
Manuel cases. The bell was endorsed to the
parish priest, Rev. Father Basilio Fortuna.
In 1971, Representative Jose D. Aspiras had it
enshrined at the sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity
where the 1st church of Agoo was located.
The bell had finally found its way home where it
should really belong.
