The Human Circulatory System

Subject : Science 6  Parts and Function of Circulatory System
Module No. : 5
Time Frame : 4 days

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

 name the parts and describe the function of the circulatory system
 explain how the different organs of each system work
together
 relate the importance of the circulatory system

INTRODUCTION:

The circulatory system is also known as the cardiovascular system. It is one of the most
important systems in your body. The circulatory system is responsible for circulating blood and
transporting nutrients, minerals and oxygen throughout your body. Without circulatory system your
body will not function well.

LET’S TAKE A LOOK

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Take a look at the picture above. Hold your wrist with your middle and index fingers. What do you feel? You
can feel your pulse. Your pulse can be detected on your neck or wrist.

Why does your heart beat? How is this connected with your pulse? These are all part of your circulator
system.

The circulatory system is made up of blood, heart, and blood vessels.

Our circulatory system carries

blood which contains nutrients , oxygen and water to all parts of the body. It also carries carbon dioxide and other waste
materials out of your body.

1. The HEART- the major organ of the circulatory system

~3~
The heart has four (4) chambers.

Lower two(2) chambers Upper two(2) Chambers

Right ventricles and Right atrium and

Left ventricles left atrium

FUNCTIONS OF THE HEART

 The heart is the main organ of the circulatory system. It is located at the center part of our chest.
 It pumps blood that is distributed to the entire parts of your body.
2. FUNCTIONS OF THE BLOOD

Blood transports oxygen ,water and nutrients needed by your body. It also carries waste materials such us
carbon dioxide out of the body.

Blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells ,platelets and plasma

BLOOD

Carries other
blood components

carries oxygen
known as erythrocyte

~4~
helps defend the
body from infections.Known also
Leukocyte

Helps clot blood

When there is an injjury, known also as
Thrombocyte

3. BLOOD VESSELS

The blood vessels are the network of tubes that carry the blood, pumped by the heart, around the body.

The blood in our body flows in the blood vessels. There are three types of blood vessels namely: artery , vien
and capillary

The artery carries

blood from the
Heart to all parts the vein carries blood
of the body.s back to the heart.

the arteries and veins. The wall is very

thin and allows nutrients, oxygen
and carbon dioxide to pass through it.

How does the circulatory system work?

BLOOD CIRCULATION
Carries blood from the

heart to the lungs to be

oxygenated then back to the
heart
oxygenated then back to
the heart
Carries the oxygenated blood
from the heart to be
deoxygenated then back to
the heart.

How does the circulatory system work with other system?

 The cardiovascular or respiratory system’s central organ is the heart
which pumps blood to the different parts of your body. The blood travels from the heart to the
lungs , where the respiratory system supplies the blood with oxygen.

 digestive system, and excretory system are some of the body systems that work very closely with
circulatory system. It enables all the organs in the body to connect with one another.

Blood carries carbon dioxide blood transports oxygen from the lungs
from body cells to the lungs. to the digestive system.

blood carries oxygen blood carries

from the lungs to the digestive food
body cells. from the digestive
system to the
body cells.

Do it yourself
