THE HUMAN BODY

Subject : Science 6  Musculoskeletal System
Module No. : 1  Parts and Function of
Time Frame : 4 days Musculoskeletal System

OBJECTIVES at the end of this module, you should be able to:

 Identify and describe the musculoskeletal body system

 Explain how the musculoskeletal body system work with

other body systems.

INTRODUCTION

Every time we play with our classmates and friends or take a walk, we used our bones,
muscles and joints. We cannot move, walk, play, sit, stand or do any activities without our
muscles and bones. Our body systems includes the musculoskeletal, integumentary,
digestive, respiratory, circulatory and nervous system.

The musculoskeletal is made up of the, tendons, ligaments, joints and other connective
tissues that support and bind tissues and bones together. In this unit you will learn about the parts
and functions of different organs system and how they together to perform specific action.

Pretest Answer the following question below.

~1~

a. Muscles and bones

b. Stomach and Brain
c. Lungs and muscles
d. Heart and blood

2. What body system is involved when you run?

a. Muscles and bones

b. Stomach and Brain
c. Lungs and muscles
d. Heart and blood

3. What system or parts of the body is involved in doing physical activities below?

a. arms and head

b. feet and arm
c. head and lungs
d. back and front

4. Which of the following is the correct path for food in the digestive system?

~2~

THE HUMAN BODY SYSTEM

1. MUSKULOSKELETAL SYSTEM = Provides support, stability and movement to the body.

It is made up of bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and joints.

A bone is a hard substance that makes up the skeleton. It reminds the framework of
the entire body. Thus, it give the body its support and shape. The bones also protect the internal
parts of the body such as:

~3~
CRANIUM THE BACKBONES THE RIBS

- Protects the brain -protects the spinal cord - protects the

heart and lungs

PARTS OF THE BONE

Inside the bones are tissue called

The bone marrow that produces the

Red blood cells.

JOINTS are the parts where two bones meet. There are 400 joints in the human body. Joints
allow both movements and flexibility for us to move.

PARTS OF THE JOINTS

Cartilage; Acts as cushion between two bones

Ligaments; connects bones to bones

Muscles; allows movement to occur joint.

Tendon a tough, flexible tissue that attaches to muscles

and bones

Tendon

~4~
Muscles always work together in pairs. When one muscle contract, the other muscle relaxes.
Example the biceps and triceps. We cannot move without muscles.

Example of muscles are the arms and legs muscles.

When your arm is bent When your arm is straightened the biceps
contract while the the biceps relaxes while the triceps
triceps relaxes. contracts.

How does musculoskeletal works with integumentary and digestive system?

A.Musculoskeletal and the integumentary system

 The skin is the largest organs of the body system, It protects the muscles and bones.
 The skin also protects you from the entrance of microbes and avoid diseases.

B. Musculoskeletal and digestive system

 The digestive system has muscle from the mouth passing to throat the going to
the stomach and to the intestine, where food is undergo for final digestion

The Team Work of Bones, Muscles and Brain

~5~
The bones, muscles and the brain work together as a team. The brain serves as the
director of all the activities of the muscles and the bones. The movements of the voluntary
muscles when you decide to run or flee is dictated by your brain. Other involuntary motions such
as pumping of your blood by your heart, the digestion of food in the stomach and the respiration
of the lungs are also directed by your brain.

Take a look at the kids playing soccer. Their movements are directed by the brain and
whatever involuntary motions happening in their internal organs are also mandated by their
nervous system.
