1. ‘Women now have the chance to achieve anything they want.

’How do you respond

to this statement?

Women have been facing the dilemma of freedom for a substantial period of time. As
society progresses, it can be seen that women are becoming less restricted in
achieving anything they want, however the extent to which they can is limited to
society’s backwards traditions and values.

Arguments for: - in present society, women may not have the chance to achieve anything
they want. Depending on their environment, and situation, women living in developing
countries such as Ghana LIC, factors such as culture and tradition are still heavily
engrained in their societal structure – putting women in particular at a disadvantage. Their
freedom is heavily restricted under traditions such as forced marriages as well as
discriminating against them in terms of receiving the opportunity to be educated. As
opposed to this, women in developed countries such as the UK abide by laws which ensure
they have free will, for example they have the choice to be educated if they wish to be.
Therefore, though it can be demonstrated that some women can achieve anything they
want, they’re restricted by law depending on the circumstance to achieve certain things.

Currently, women cannot achieve anything they want due to the heavy influence of
religion. Islamically for example, they are restricted in their dress sense following the rule
of God in the Quran. Countries such as Saudi Arabia as well as Iran have implemented this,
to the extent where it is societally unacceptable not to dress modestly. Though it can be
said that women can choose to follow agnosticism or atheism, women do not have the
freedom of choosing their own attire without scrutiny from others or, in some places, they
may be committing an offence.

Women do not have the chance to achieve anything they want, due to the lack of
opportunities given to them. For example in the workplace, majority of CEOs and upper
class members of staff such as managers are men, and women do not receive the same
chance to elevate their status. It can be argued that an abundance of protests taking
place for decades against this issue ensures that women today have the chance to progress
in their careers. However, it still stands that the chance they receive is arguably much
lesser than a man in today’s society would receive – therefore highlighting that women
cannot achieve anything they want, since achieving equal status to men, for example, has
not been successful.

In conclusion, though a woman can achieve certain things that may not have been
permitted previously, it is evident that women still do not have the chance to achieve
anything they want – through the example of their struggle for equality to men.
