Hello Fam,

This week’s newsletter looks a little different from normal, and that’s
partly because we have big (and hard!) news to share with you. After
21 years of squeezing our way into your inboxes, our funky little
e:zine - and our operations as an organization - are winding down at
the end of this month.

Our community means the most to us, which is why we’re here to tell
you this in person. We still believe that our work is absolutely
essential - maybe more now than ever. But sadly, despite our
relentless efforts, we have been unable to secure the financial
support our operations require to continue. This has forced our
board to take the difficult decision that we have to close our doors
until we can find a way for our work to be more sustainable.

Kubatana Newsletter: 7 June 2022 Page 1

Before we go (you can expect to keep getting our emails in June),
we want to spend some time celebrating who we (and yes, that’s us
and you) are. From our funky street level campaigns (remember Fix
This Pliz, those big yellow signs, the Constitution t-shirts and
countless DVDs?) to our endless pages of job vacancies, our work
has included things for fun, things you need, and lots of important
civic information in between. Even when we’ve felt gloomy, we’ve
always tried to look for joy, and to deliver you hope and inspiration
alongside our cutting edge analysis of the craziness all around us.
We’ve always tried to reach you where you’re at - on social media,
email and WhatsApp - with what you need. And if we’re honest with
ourselves, our favourite part of the journey to date has been hearing
back from each one of you who has decided to speak up (or out!).

Kubatana Newsletter: 7 June 2022 Page 2

So, to help us celebrate the work of Kubatana, and to pause and
think about the gap we will leave behind, please can we ask YOU to
chat back to us and tell us:

• How has Kubatana helped you in your life?

• Is there anything you’ve changed as a result of Kubatana?
• What will you miss most about us?

Has Kubatana ever helped you get inspired, get active, get outraged
or get a job? Now is the time to get in touch and let us know how
Kubatana has made a difference to you.

Please tell us! And let us know if there is anything else you think is
important for us to know as we start to wind down operations.

Make sure you reach out to us on info@kubatana.net or send us a

WhatsApp on +263 779 567 768.

We love you all, big time.

Speak up!

Design of Footbridges – Chimanimani: Practical Action

Deadline: 24 June 2022 (12noon)

About Practical Action

We are an international development organisation putting ingenious
ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world. We help
people find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems.
Challenges made worse by catastrophic climate change and
persistent gender inequality. We work with communities to develop
ingenious, lasting and locally owned solutions for agriculture, water
and waste management, climate resilience and clean energy. And
we share what works with others, so answers that start small can
grow big.

We’re a global change-making group, working with communities who

are vulnerable to poverty and climate change to support them to
change their world. Together we develop innovative, community
powered and locally owned solutions that achieve transformative
change in lives and livelihoods. And we work with a range of
partners, including governments, business and international
organisations to ensure improvements are sustained and scaled and
to change the systems that keep people poor and vulnerable.

About Flood Resilience Measurement for Communities project

Kubatana Newsletter: 7 June 2022 Page 10

Climate change is a global challenge and whilst all countries have
an increased risk of climate change induced hazards (floods,
droughts, storms, cyclones, heatwaves), low-income countries like
Zimbabwe are more susceptible to the impact when hazards occur.
Floods, however, have affected more people globally than any other
type of disaster in the 21st century. They can literally ‘wash away’
overnight what communities have gained over years, in terms of
development and growth, and can trigger diseases and health
emergencies. Recent analysis shows that floods and related issues
have affected more people than earthquakes, tornados, drought,
and hurricanes put together. In addition, the frequency and intensity
of floods is expected to increase worldwide due to climate change.
Rather than relieving the ‘symptoms’ of flood disasters through post-
event recovery, evidence from a number of projects and studies
suggests that it is more cost effective to address the underlying
problems that result in flood losses. By reducing people’s
vulnerability to floods, we build flood resilience and help reduce the
impacts of floods. This helps people to continue to develop their
communities and improve their lives.

To increase resilience to floods, Practical Action is implementing a

36-month Flood Resilience Measurement for Community (FRMC)
project, targeting 11 Wards in Chimanimani District, Zimbabwe. The
goal of the project is that floods have no negative impact on people’s
and businesses’ ability to thrive. Its main objectives are to advocate
for increased funding for flood resilience, improved policies at global,
national and sub-national levels, and improved flood resilience
practice. A baseline study on current community resilience to floods
identified the need for footbridges in Ward 9 (Shinja Communal) and
Ward 13 (Nyahode). Some communities in these areas cannot
access major services when floods occur due to lack of bridges.
Provision of footbridges will therefore ensure uninterrupted access to
services such as shops and clinics, as well as provide alternative
evacuation routes. School children will be able to attend lessons
without any interruption.

Kubatana Newsletter: 7 June 2022 Page 11

Scope of work
The scope of work entails design of two footbridges at selected
points across Nyahode River in Ward 13, and across Nyanyadzi
River in Ward 9. The footbridges are to allow passage for
pedestrians, bicycles, livestock, pack animals, wheelbarrows and
motorcycles.

Waste Management Baseline Survey: Community Water
Alliance (CWA)
Deadline: 10 June 2022

The Community Water Alliance (CWA) is a grassroots-based Civil

Society Organization that does work on 3 program areas namely:
WASH (water sanitation and hygiene), Environment and Climate
issues.

CWA is implementing the Joint Community Waste Management

Project (JOCWAM) project which is a joint initiative with City of
Harare Glen View district that seeks to leverage community-based
institutions’ infrastructure in Glen View to initiate a waste
management program that places reduce, recycle and re-use at the
centre of community-based plastics and solid waste management
discourse, programming and campaigns. The project does this
through placing community stewardship and 3Rs (reduce, recycle
and reuse) issues at the forefront of Glen View waste management
system well in advance of the waste collection schedules by City of
Harare. While the Government of Zimbabwe has focused on
environmental protection and improved community livelihoods as
desired outcomes in the National Development Strategy 1 pillar on
environment, the two institutions understand that critical community
work around community-based waste management must begin early
to accommodate the slow rate at which behaviour change taking
place and to accommodate the new turn towards community based
waste management that is at the centre of JOCWAM’s work.

The project responds to the ever increasing volume of plastic waste

being generated that is increasing at a faster rate than the
expansion of solid waste management measures and ability of the
City of Harare to meet the financial and technical resources required
to parallel this growth.

Baseline survey will be done to determine type and quantity of waste

generated at shopping centres, markets and household level in Glen
View and assess potential for recycling. The survey will also look at
gender dynamics on waste management.
